00:02:05.530prequels for movies remakes re-releases

00:02:09.340ports and even a cafe to call this

00:02:12.250series final is no longer ironic it's

00:02:15.310practically sarcasm at this point and

00:02:17.380while each new iteration always features

00:02:19.840some improvements the jump to Final

00:02:22.270Fantasy 10 was more like a massive leap

00:02:24.640for JRPGs everywhere this wasn't just

00:02:27.730another Final Fantasy this game

00:02:30.130dramatically expanded the definition of

00:02:32.410what a Final Fantasy could be no more

00:02:35.410pre-rendered backgrounds now we've got

00:02:38.020fully 3d environments the tried-and-true

00:02:40.780active battle system replaced with the

00:02:43.120unique Final Fantasy take on turn-based

00:02:48.970grids in and it was the first Final

00:03:18.640Final Fantasies before this one but ten

00:03:21.570immediately became my new gold standard

00:03:24.310for JRPGs in general and that's probably

00:03:27.250because I played through the entire game

00:03:29.320alongside my brother Jacques we had a

00:03:32.470blast together and after that it became

00:03:34.989a new tradition for the two of us to sit

00:03:37.360down and complete each new Final Fantasy

00:03:40.209together but we both become so busy that

00:03:43.270we haven't had the time to do that in

00:03:45.040ages but I'm gonna recapture a little

00:03:47.530bit of that nostalgia when I complete

00:03:49.780Final Fantasy 10 once more but please

00:03:52.600believe me when I say that there is a

00:03:54.209ridiculous amount of stuff to complete

00:06:29.340been an insanely popular franchise but

00:06:32.040the cinematic aesthetics of all of its

00:06:33.720subsequent big-budget sequels can be

00:06:36.180traced back to this spot some of this

00:06:38.880games choices might seem dated or even

00:06:41.970embarrassing by today's standards but

00:06:44.220back in the day this was cutting-edge

00:06:46.740and I loved every minute of it and I'm

00:06:49.470happy to say that a lot of that charm is

00:06:51.660still here our extremely long tale

00:06:54.630begins with our protagonist who's

00:06:56.820officially known as titus personally I

00:06:59.640thought he was Titus but since he is

00:07:01.950renamed Abal and because he looks

00:07:03.720exactly like early nineties rom-com

00:07:13.050Spoony he was the first one to come up

00:07:14.730with his meg Ryan [ __ ] so meg Ryan is a

00:07:17.100hot blitzball player in his hometown of

00:07:19.740Zander King but all the aqua rugby and

00:07:22.500heavy metal in the world won't save him

00:07:24.870when a massive beast known as sin

00:07:27.030attacks sin sucks meg Ryan into a vortex

00:07:30.840and when he awakes

00:07:32.220he's inside some mysterious drowned

00:07:34.530ruins he gets attacked by some monsters

00:07:37.020but it's saved by some gaudy treasure

00:08:59.870burden as summoner along with her

00:09:01.940eclectic group of Guardians there's

00:09:04.040wakka the gregarious Islander who sounds

00:09:07.010a little bit like bender Lulu the

00:09:09.290brooding Black Mage beset by belt

00:09:11.540buckles and kimahri ronso who is catmen

00:09:15.170oh and later on they're joined by the

00:09:17.690one-eyed one-armed Oren and Riku who

00:09:20.900fulfills your bubbly girl quota meg Ryan

00:09:23.330agrees to travel along with them on the

00:09:25.670way to some blitzball tournaments but

00:09:28.130come on you know he's gonna be a

00:09:29.870guardian doesn't even take that long

00:09:31.700together they set off to finish the

00:09:34.100pilgrimage defeats in earn another

00:09:36.350desperately needed calm period for Spira

00:09:38.690and get meg ryan back home to the early

00:09:41.39090s the first thing one might notice

00:09:43.460about this game's premise is how

00:09:44.890delightfully blasphemous it is the

00:09:47.480concepts of belief sin and punishment

00:09:50.480are explored in ways that only a JRPG

00:09:53.510can good stuff but the next thing that

00:09:55.910strikes me about this game's narrative

00:09:57.470is how many mature themes it tackles

00:10:00.260we're talking mature in both the extreme

00:10:02.960violence kind of way and the complex

00:10:05.780interpersonal relationships kind of way

00:10:31.500stuff with the surprisingly genuine and

00:10:34.350believable romance between muna and meg

00:10:37.140Ryan you've also got Meg Ryan's strained

00:10:39.510relationship with his long-lost father

00:10:41.550and the overarching themes of racism

00:10:44.550with the seldom understood Al Bhed

00:10:46.920people the allegory may run thick in

00:10:49.290this game but to a kid or someone who's

00:10:51.480in the mood for some heavy metaphor

00:10:53.190Final Fantasy 10 hits the spot the

00:10:55.770storytelling is made all the more

00:10:57.510immersive by the visuals which were

00:10:59.610impressive back in the day and have only

00:11:01.830gotten better thanks to the rerelease

00:11:03.870Spira seems more real than every other

00:11:06.210final fantasy world before it due to its

00:11:08.640several locales all being fully rendered

00:11:11.130in 3d some of these cutscenes are

00:11:13.950majestic as fine but what's really

00:11:16.290impressive is the decision to not focus

00:11:18.690the game's design on Western or

00:11:20.940traditional medieval fantasy this

00:11:22.980franchise had been drawing from that

00:11:24.690well for a long time but Final Fantasy

00:11:27.48010 is decidedly influenced by South

00:11:30.390Pacific and East Asian cultures it's

00:11:32.970refreshing as hell and gives the game a

00:11:35.430Roxxon visual identity crystal clear

00:11:38.220waters and slightly brown people

00:11:40.080praising a deity gotta be Final Fantasy

00:11:42.72010 the soundtrack is absolutely on point

00:11:45.140it includes some of the most memorable

00:11:47.280tracks in the entire Final Fantasy

00:11:49.740catalog this game kind of represented

00:11:51.960composer Nobuo Uematsu's passing of the

00:11:54.720torch to his sound team but you would

00:11:57.060never be able to tell that face on the

00:11:58.830quality of the soundtrack and then

00:12:01.200there's the big issue with the voice

00:12:03.120acting which holds a very special place

00:12:04.890in my heart it was the first time I

00:12:06.900heard pile of fantasy characters speak I

00:12:09.300know the voice acting in this game has

00:12:11.010become something of a joke but let's

00:12:13.170actually break things down this first

00:12:15.270specimen is this scene by the pool in

00:12:17.339mock alanya it's got a reputation for

00:12:19.290being cheesy but you know who the real

00:12:21.120culprit is here localization having to

00:12:24.180sync English dubbing to mouth movements

00:12:26.310that are clearly intended for the

00:12:28.140original Japanese version is tough and

00:12:30.390that was their intent to minimalize all

00:12:32.580the backlash with sinking but the

00:12:34.500romance of this scene is clear and

00:12:36.630undeniable and that's what's most

00:12:38.880important

00:12:39.649this scene is in my humble opinion

00:12:42.189extremely heartfelt man and then there's

00:12:45.199the infamous laughing scene which many

00:12:47.720cite as the reason they don't play JRPGs

00:12:54.970many claim that this scene suffers from

00:12:57.769terrible voice acting and horrible

00:13:00.259direction it isn't perfect or anything

00:13:02.300but it's a shame when things get

00:13:04.309prejudged especially when taken out of

00:13:07.100context but when you actually sit down

00:13:09.079and play this game it becomes clear that

00:13:11.749this scene was designed to be awkward

00:13:14.720these two people are about to go on what

00:13:17.089is basically a suicide mission to save

00:13:19.850the world this is a scene about two

00:13:22.910people forcing themselves to laugh when

00:13:25.790neither of them genuinely feels like it

00:13:27.920it feels forced because they're

00:13:29.899literally forcing themselves to reading

00:13:32.509the path before them and that's a big

00:13:35.119part of what makes Final Fantasy 10 so

00:13:37.369wonderful on paper it can be written off

00:13:39.740as just yet another JRPG but when you

00:13:42.529give it a fair chance and have a little

00:13:45.050bit of patience this game is revealed as

00:13:47.360uniquely thoughtful and complex with

00:13:49.819great presentation and some interesting

00:13:52.189games throughout the Final Fantasy 10

00:13:54.559series was executive producer and father

00:13:57.559of Final Fantasy Hironobu Sakaguchi swan

00:14:00.499song and the passion that he had for the

00:14:02.809entire franchise can be felt in this

00:14:05.360game but I do suppose that laughing

00:14:07.550scene is still good for a laugh if you

00:14:09.769need one

00:16:53.589what's even more unique is that you can

00:16:55.509change how overdrive meter is

00:16:57.189accumulated with different overdrive

00:16:58.990statuses there are ones that trigger

00:17:01.029every time you attack an enemy every

00:17:02.860time your friends get hurt or even just

00:17:04.750by spending time alone like an introvert

00:17:06.819manipulating these overdrive meters is

00:17:08.980the key to winning some of the more

00:17:10.510complicated fights in the late-game

00:17:12.130fight long enough and you'll be able to

00:17:14.020level up via the sphere grid instead of

00:17:16.329experience points leading to blanket

00:17:43.030get so buff via leveling sometimes you

00:17:45.970need some hardware to get the job done

00:17:47.830and the baddest weapons in all up on

00:17:49.900Fantasy 10 are undoubtedly the celestial

00:17:52.840weapons each character has their own and

00:17:55.210they have to be crafted from lower

00:17:56.830quality weapons breasts and sigils

00:17:58.960hidden throughout Spira

00:18:00.460the issue is that these collectibles are

00:18:02.440usually tied to link these side missions

00:18:04.780and grueling battles making the quest

00:18:07.150for the celestial weapons feel like an

00:18:08.770Easter egg hunt except instead of eggs

00:18:11.020they're pieces of a bazooka so if you

00:18:13.270intend to complete this game and go for

00:18:15.340those celestial weapons prepare for some

00:18:17.559of the most ridiculous tear-inducing

00:18:19.390side quests of your life be ready to

00:18:21.789dodge 200 lightning bolts in a row

00:18:24.039expect to be participating in some

00:18:26.020maddening chocobo races and not riding

00:18:28.900chocobos mind you that's as fun as

00:18:30.940always but actually racing on a chocobo

00:18:33.580you might as well grab some fireball

00:18:35.350whiskey because your chocobo handles

00:18:37.120like it's had far too much to drink add

00:18:39.190in a harsh time limit and some

00:18:41.690voidable impeding seagulls and it's a

00:18:43.700recipe sure to make you hate your once

00:18:45.889favorite balls of gold and fluff ah

00:18:47.899and then there's the blitzball minigame

00:18:49.909which is yet another link into the great

00:18:51.679side quest chain and may look

00:18:53.509action-packed to spectators but in

00:18:55.519reality it mostly plays itself when

00:18:57.769you've got the ball you can choose

00:18:59.179between a few actions but ultimately

00:19:01.009you're just hoping that your team stats

00:19:03.080outweigh your opponents blitz ball may

00:19:05.690boil down to one set of numbers fighting

00:19:08.240against another set of numbers but it's

00:19:10.070actually pretty fun as a palate cleanser

00:19:12.019for the main game your team stats

00:19:14.360progress the more you play and you can

00:19:16.190even recruit unassuming NPCs as new

00:19:45.740one of the cooler parallels to different

00:19:48.049cultures and acceptance of said culture

00:19:50.120is the Al Bhed primers throughout the

00:19:52.250group's journey you encounter a ton of

00:19:54.500Al Bhed people and you can almost never

00:19:56.899understand whatever they are saying

00:19:58.820hailed as one of the only few missiles

00:20:01.730in the game you can collect the Al Bhed

00:20:03.860primers that will translate their

00:20:05.600language for you and if you're the kind

00:20:07.309of person that wants to really

00:20:08.659experience all the language bending from

00:20:12.470and just load your Al Bhed primer stats

00:20:15.259from previous game saves that way you

00:20:17.659can really enjoy everything there's just

00:20:19.730so much to complete in this freaking

00:20:21.860game especially once you enter the late

00:20:24.080game like the appropriately named Omega

00:20:26.809dungeon which is chock-full of monsters

00:20:28.940just itching to one-shot your party at

00:20:31.009first and then there's the three secret

00:20:33.230Aeons an optional set of additional

00:20:35.090powerful Pokemon for you to collect

00:20:36.919except we're completing this thing so

00:20:39.080optional becomes get to it and if you

00:20:41.840still haven't had enough battling you

00:22:12.599triple overdrive ability which you can

00:22:14.549create with items which can be obtained

00:22:16.829via the monster arena equip that weapon

00:22:24.839now ready to convert overdrive meter

00:22:44.700attacking that damage then gets

00:22:46.469converted into tons of overdrive which

00:22:48.929then gets dumped into AP which is the

00:22:51.389stuff you need to start making dents in

00:22:53.369that [ __ ] of a sphere grid this method

00:22:55.469still take

00:22:56.169hours but it beats joining the AARP

00:22:58.899while grinding it out normally but even

00:23:00.789with that method only maxing out the

00:23:03.100grid is the longest most grueling task

00:23:05.649you can take on in this game seriously

00:23:07.690you have to activate every node on the

00:23:10.090sphere grid including the empties in

00:23:13.029order to ensure that you have the

00:23:14.590maximum of every stat for all your

00:23:17.019characters which is 255 you have to

00:23:19.179create specific stat no it's for all the

00:23:21.549stat categories now this is not that

00:23:23.440hard to do for all the stats except for

00:23:25.869one the luck stat to get the luck node

00:23:28.419you need to fight a pretty gruesomely

00:23:30.279long fight in the monster arena no less

00:23:32.769than 65 times to acquire said nodes but

00:23:36.190here's the kicker you also need the

00:23:38.379corresponding sphere activator which in

00:23:40.539comparison with all the other stat

00:23:42.399spheres you can purchase or bribe or

00:23:44.169steal from monsters except for luck

00:23:46.869you'll have to fight another specific

00:23:49.659monster from the monster arena hundreds

00:23:52.419of times because you have to remember

00:23:53.889folks you're maxing out every character

00:23:56.619this monster only drops two notes at a

00:23:59.169time upon overkill which means you'll

00:24:00.820have to acquire about four hundred-plus

00:24:02.710of these sphere activators oh you

00:24:36.190climbing well past 10 million now this

00:24:39.039is my jam taking on these giant bastards

00:24:42.070with bastard stomping boots these boss

00:24:44.470battles are intricate and diverse

00:24:46.330requiring an extensive knowledge of the

00:24:48.309game and some old fashioned trial and

00:24:50.499error but the baddest one of all and the

00:24:52.480hardest enemy in the entire game would

00:24:55.090be Bennett's with a whopping 12 million

00:24:58.119HP and stats maxed out to the brim this

00:25:01.119guy is here to check if you've mastered

00:25:02.950the game this fight Note will take you

00:25:05.76945 minutes to [ __ ]

00:25:07.440and it requires an insane understanding

00:25:09.570of how to take it down penance has a

00:25:11.669left and right arm that have their own

00:25:13.769movesets and stats that ultimately

00:25:15.990require you to kill the arms in a very

00:25:18.029specific pattern and if you don't the

00:25:20.429boss will one-shot to you this is very

00:25:23.159easy to mess up considering the

00:25:24.929precision imagine getting 2 minute 44 of

00:25:27.750this fight and you gotta start all over

00:25:29.759because you got to comfortable now the

00:25:31.590alternate easy way Chi's path of this is

00:25:34.649to summon the Aeon Yojimbo and bribe him

00:25:37.289to kill the boss but that's not fun

00:25:39.659there's something so rewarding about

00:25:41.879conquering this son of a [ __ ] ala

00:25:44.039natural haha yeah that's the good stuff

00:25:47.190Final Fantasy 10 is a game of extremes

00:25:50.190you can stick to the main storyline but

00:25:52.740then you'll probably miss out on some of

00:25:54.059the coolest most satisfying stuff the

00:25:56.700game has to offer you can choose to

00:25:58.620pursue some side quests but due to how

00:26:01.110interconnected they are some side quests

00:26:04.019might sneakily turn into all side quests

00:26:07.019for us completionists pharmacy 10 may be

00:26:09.840a colossal monster but it's surmountable

00:26:13.230with some time and patience and lots of

00:26:15.809fighting and some blind luck and maybe a

00:26:19.379strategy guy
