00:00:01.700alright hey everyone I'm Alex the
00:00:04.080director of outer wilds today I'm gonna
00:00:06.420be showing off some gameplay outer wilds
00:00:09.389is a space exploration game we play as
00:00:12.000the newest member of our villages space
00:00:14.160program which sort of like this
00:00:15.599backwoods version of NASA there's our
00:00:17.880ship and it's also a mystery it turns
00:00:20.609out that our character is trapped in a
00:00:22.560time loop and so we're gonna do the
00:00:24.750sensible thing we're gonna suit up and
00:00:26.130blast off and go explore the solar
00:00:28.080system in search of answers as to what
00:00:30.900the hell is going on
00:00:37.579we are in space we've taken some
00:00:41.190liberties with the size of planets by
00:00:43.650the game the whole game takes place in
00:00:45.989this one solar system of miniature
00:00:48.030planets but each planet is super dense
00:00:50.879in terms of the things that you can find
00:00:52.769and sort of like the Russian doll
00:00:54.840approach to level design there's just a
00:00:56.339lot of stuff buried beneath the surface
00:00:58.050oh I try to land on the moon though here
00:01:00.989because it's close and relatively
00:01:03.510spoiler free I don't say how to ask her
00:01:18.740Oscar is a hearth Ian just like us so
00:01:21.720that's what we look like under the suit
00:01:23.100- the Hat and esker is also a member of
00:01:27.780your villages space program except we
00:01:30.479talked to them here and they tell us
00:01:31.979that they've been on the moon for a
00:01:33.210while it's sort of like the rest of the
00:01:35.340space program kind of forgot them so
00:01:37.350they've just been up here for a long
00:01:38.670time they're just happy to have the
00:01:39.930company but we're just here to say hi
00:01:43.020we're gonna go bounce over to the North
00:01:44.790Pole the gravity on the moon you can see
00:01:46.680it's a lot less I'm using my jet pack to
00:01:48.270kind of scoot around and I'm gonna pull
00:01:51.240up our signal scope one of the tools we
00:01:53.310have all we're exploring a signal scope
00:01:55.560can pick up signals from distant planets
00:01:57.420so here we can hear there's someone's
00:01:59.610like playing the flute over on giant
00:02:01.200steep probably another member of the
00:02:03.000space program so we're gonna gonna go
00:02:05.460investigate
00:02:13.890[Music]
00:02:16.500Space Flight and outer while it is
00:02:18.940pretty realistic in the sense that
00:02:21.370there's no friction so if you start
00:02:23.440moving in one direction you're not gonna
00:02:24.700stop you have to kind of know out your
00:02:26.230velocity we're using your thrusters but
00:02:28.450we didn't want people to have to be
00:02:29.950astrophysicist to play they came so we
00:02:31.690added there's an autopilot you can
00:02:33.220engage you can lock on to it planet and
00:02:34.990press a button and we'll start moving
00:02:36.550towards it it's not perfect like if the
00:02:39.130Sun is between us and our target will
00:02:40.690just go straight into the Sun so you
00:02:43.630know you gotta put a little bit of
00:02:44.530thought into it and you don't have to
00:02:46.720use it you can fly manually if you want
00:02:48.220to I'm actually gonna bomb out of it
00:02:51.730here and go in manual to giant Steve
00:02:57.060giant steeps a gas planet so manual in
00:02:59.680this case means just like slamming into
00:03:01.150the atmosphere
00:03:04.849and there's some campfire smoke called
00:03:06.890the signal scope your ship has a version
00:03:08.540of all of the tools you have on foot and
00:03:10.189yep that's the source of the flute music
00:03:12.499so let's put the ship down I'm landing
00:03:19.310like on the beach because it's a nice
00:03:20.480open space but you know if you want to
00:03:22.099you could land in a tree you know it's
00:03:23.840up to you
00:03:25.219we don't really stop you from doing much
00:03:27.620of anything in this game
00:03:28.730and here's gabbro
00:03:32.190gabbro is the chillest member of the
00:03:35.250space program for sure a lot of the
00:03:38.370planets in the game have other members
00:03:39.780of the space program kind of they've set
00:03:41.490up their own little camp and they kind
00:03:42.960of act as guides to each planet you can
00:03:45.150talk to them and they'll give you hints
00:03:46.440about what might be worth exploring or
00:03:48.180you could come back to them and tell
00:03:49.410them about things you found in this case
00:03:51.960Gabbar is gonna tell us that there's
00:03:53.790this other Island that they've dubbed
00:03:55.020statue island that has this big rock
00:03:57.270arch that might be worth going to check
00:03:58.800out but outer wilds is very much not a
00:04:01.320game we're gonna tell you what to go do
00:04:03.710there's everything you find in the game
00:04:06.150is sort of just giving you a hint about
00:04:07.440hey this might be interesting or this
00:04:09.240might help you go farther down the path
00:04:11.820to solving this mystery and it's very
00:04:13.740much up to you to take those leads and
00:04:15.950actually go and investigate but the
00:04:19.440world isn't always going to be friendly
00:04:21.510towards you as you're doing that it's a
00:04:23.730this is a world where there's like a lot
00:04:25.410of huge natural systems at play so
00:04:27.210Giants deep here has these tornados that
00:04:29.730actually will toss entire islands into
00:04:31.740space and then they'll come crashing
00:04:34.350back down and of course if we're on the
00:04:36.000island when that happens that's
00:04:37.740something we're gonna have to deal with
00:04:38.880so there's a huge theme here of nature
00:04:42.630as sort of this force you can't control
00:04:45.000and kind of have to learn how to do
00:04:47.070different planets in the game are more
00:04:49.170dangerous than others but every planet
00:04:50.820has some sort of unique huge system that
00:04:53.640you kind of have to learn how to die
00:04:56.120from it
00:05:00.020and this looks like the rock arch island
00:05:02.240gabbro was talking about so we are gonna
00:05:03.950put the ship down and hop out
00:05:10.940we still have the jetpack that we were
00:05:12.770using on the moon but giant steep if you
00:05:14.690look in the lower left-hand corner of
00:05:15.980our HUD there the gravity here is about
00:05:18.230two times what it is on our home planet
00:05:19.940so even with the boost jetpacks booster
00:05:22.670we all we can do are these little short
00:05:24.050hops in every pint plan that sort of has
00:05:26.600its own unique gravity another tool at
00:05:30.170our disposal is the translator which we
00:05:32.120can use to decode this ancient text the
00:05:35.240ruins and the texts were created by this
00:05:37.070ancient race called the know my who used
00:05:39.590to live in the solar system a long time
00:05:41.000ago they also left technology like these
00:05:43.070gravity crystals that let us walk on
00:05:44.690walls and a lot of the planets and outer
00:05:47.210wilds have ruins left by the know my
00:05:49.970civilization and the more you explore
00:05:52.910you sort of read their text and sort of
00:05:56.330start to learn what happened to these
00:05:57.710people and what role they played in the
00:05:59.480overarching mysteries
00:06:08.319our final exploration tool is the little
00:06:12.169scout it's kind of this little probe we
00:06:14.150can throw out into areas that we might
00:06:16.400not be able to reach ourselves and we
00:06:18.470can take photos and kind of scan the
00:06:20.360environment and kind of get hints about
00:06:21.800how to proceed there's also a lot of
00:06:24.199times when we read know my text like
00:06:25.759this piece of text right here we'll get
00:06:27.530clues about where we might want to go
00:06:29.389explore and it's like piece of text
00:06:31.250right here is telling us that oh hey
00:06:33.169like yeah the door downstairs is locked
00:06:34.699but there's another secret way into the
00:06:36.680room inside this island and so a lot of
00:06:40.310the game is decoding the know my texts
00:06:42.319not just for the story but for sort of
00:06:44.300the clues about where we might want to
00:06:46.220go explore or how to reach a secret area
00:06:48.199because there's a lot of hidden places
00:06:50.000in the solar system that you can only
00:06:52.490reach once you know sort of the trick to
00:06:54.500do it get to getting there there's also
00:06:58.009things like this ruin here all this
00:07:00.080glowy stuff what does it do we don't
00:07:04.220know I mean I know but I'm not gonna
00:07:05.389tell you you have to cut a fertile
00:07:07.639Hollow and learn the clue
00:07:11.570we've got bigger things to worry about
00:07:13.040anyway train is approaching
00:07:21.889and we are in space along with the
00:07:25.530island we just got tossed up by that
00:07:26.909tornado there are ways to survive this
00:07:29.400situation if you know what you're doing
00:07:31.310but I'm gonna demonstrate what happens
00:07:34.530to players to most players the first
00:07:37.020time they get tossed into space by a
00:07:38.490tornado and we're dead but it's okay
00:07:50.219because like we said earlier our
00:07:52.080character is trapped in a time loop and
00:07:53.909so every time we die we're actually just
00:07:56.310gonna wake up back at the campfire where
00:07:58.349we started on timber hearth but we are
00:08:01.050gonna keep all of our knowledge so
00:08:02.520everything we've learned any clue we
00:08:04.530found we're going to use that on our
00:08:06.960next loop to try to push farther and
00:08:09.030farther into the mystery and eventually
00:08:11.039hopefully figure out what's actually
00:08:12.449going on and that's outer wilds thanks
00:08:17.669so much for watching I hope you'll check
00:08:19.680out the game when it releases later this
00:08:21.090year
