00:00:04.000welcome back everybody to another

00:00:05.359episode of de break comparison

00:00:07.040in today's episode we're going to take a

00:00:08.480look at rockstar's recently released red

00:00:10.400dead redemption 2

00:00:11.759and see how it stacks up to its 2010

00:00:13.679predecessor red dead redemption

00:00:15.839now before we begin keep in mind that

00:00:17.359it's been eight years since the original

00:00:19.039red dead redemption released

00:00:20.480so it's likely we're going to be seeing

00:00:22.080only visual improvements across the

00:00:23.359board

00:00:24.000but it's worth checking out either way

00:00:26.160also to ensure that we're getting the

00:00:27.519highest quality images

00:00:28.800we are using the xbox one x platform for

00:00:31.119both titles

00:00:32.160mainly to take advantage of the

00:00:33.360backwards compatibility improvements of

00:00:34.800the original game

00:00:36.160alright so to start this comparison off

00:00:37.840let's first look at our main character

00:00:39.360model designs

00:00:40.559for a 2010 game the john marston

00:00:42.320character model has a surprising amount

00:00:43.920of small details

00:00:45.200all of which appear sharp and clean on

00:00:46.719the 1x enhanced version of the game

00:00:48.960but the big takeaway here is the queer

00:00:50.559improvement to the physics effects on

00:00:51.920the character's clothes with wind

00:00:53.440blowing small edges of clothing more

00:00:55.120realistically

00:00:56.239clothing in the original game also blew

00:00:57.680in the wind slightly but it was much

00:00:59.199more subtle

00:01:00.239one other cool little detail in red dead

00:01:01.8402 is the player's hat which can fall off

00:01:03.760during combat and needs to be manually

00:01:05.600recovered

00:01:06.320adding a fun new level of immersion to

00:01:08.000the experience the hats would fall off

00:01:09.840in red dead redemption but only on npcs

00:01:12.720almost equally important to the main

00:01:14.159character model is his trusty steed

00:01:16.000and red dead redemption's horse

00:01:17.439animations have remained the absolute

00:01:18.960best in the entire gaming industry

00:01:20.799despite countless games over the past 8

00:01:22.640years that have utilized horses to some

00:01:24.159degree

00:01:24.960red dead redemption 2 seems to push this

00:01:26.799boundary even further

00:01:28.000with even more advanced animations

00:01:29.520offering smoother muscle movement

00:01:30.880transitions and

00:01:31.759even greater attention to detail horses

00:01:34.000can be spooked by loud noises and

00:01:35.600predators and need to be calmed down

00:01:37.520and can even get dirty requiring the

00:01:39.119player to clean them either by grooming

00:01:40.479them or having them run through water

00:01:42.320animations overall have seen some

00:01:44.000significant improvements over the first

00:01:45.600red dead redemption

00:01:46.880john marston always felt stiff and

00:01:48.560awkward as he ran but arthur morgan

00:01:50.720seems to behave more naturally

00:01:52.320and the sprinting animation feels like

00:01:53.920it has some genuine momentum to it

00:01:56.159next i want to look at some basic

00:01:57.600environmental texture work here's where

00:01:59.439we can see some obvious massive

00:02:00.880improvements between games

00:02:02.399things like the ground not only have

00:02:03.759higher resolution textures but also

00:02:05.439feature a variety of environmental

00:02:06.880decorations to make the world feel more

00:02:08.399believable

00:02:09.440larger objects like boulders appeared

00:02:11.039bland in the original game and are much

00:02:13.040more realistic in redemption too

00:02:15.200even the train tracks look better in red

00:02:17.440dead one train tracks were just placed

00:02:19.120over top of a pebble texture

00:02:20.879but in red dead 2 the tracks blended

00:02:22.640more seamlessly with the environment

00:02:24.319with pebbles covering parts of the track

00:02:26.720lighting is another field where red dead

00:02:28.2392 excels

00:02:29.360red dead 1's lighting effects were never

00:02:31.120actually that great to begin with

00:02:32.800there were some nice god ray effects but

00:02:34.560there was always this strange shimmering

00:02:36.160that made it seem like you were always

00:02:37.280staring at the sun through a series of

00:02:38.560tree branches

00:02:39.840red dead 2 not only removes this

00:02:41.440annoying shimmering effect but also

00:02:43.120features

00:02:43.599fully dynamic light shafts and far more

00:02:45.760realistic global illumination

00:02:47.680night time scenes have a much more

00:02:49.200believable appearance to them now

00:02:50.720with the moon probably reflecting light

00:02:52.480onto the environment rather than just

00:02:54.239appearing as a static object in the sky

00:02:55.920box

00:02:56.879shadows were also improved significantly

00:02:58.959in the original red dead redemption the

00:03:00.640shadow edges would shimmer rapidly and

00:03:02.319were far too sharp

00:03:03.680but in red dead 2 the shadows

00:03:05.360appropriately fade in a gradient

00:03:06.879relative to the distance of the object

00:03:08.959there's still a bit of that shimmer but

00:03:10.400it's far more subtle now and less

00:03:12.159distracting thanks to the increased

00:03:13.519shadow resolution

00:03:14.800next up we have several different

00:03:16.239examples of special effects used

00:03:17.760throughout each game

00:03:19.040one thing that i was surprised to see

00:03:20.319toned down was the dynamic movement of

00:03:22.000various vegetation in the game world

00:03:23.840now the vegetation absolutely still

00:03:25.599moves in redemption too and more

00:03:27.200realistically

00:03:28.159but the 2010 game had grass sprites that

00:03:30.319seemed to move more noticeably than in

00:03:31.760redemption 2.

00:03:33.040another odd change are the dynamite

00:03:34.720explosions which appear to have been

00:03:36.319downplayed substantially in the sequel

00:03:38.400the dynamite in the first game was loud

00:03:40.159and felt incredibly powerful

00:03:41.920now at first i thought well maybe the

00:03:43.760dynamite explosions aren't supposed to

00:03:45.120be crazy big and they made it more

00:03:46.720realistic in redemption too

00:03:48.400but after spending a bit of time looking

00:03:50.080up videos of dynamite exploding might

00:03:51.920think the original game actually had it

00:03:53.360right

00:03:54.000dynamite generally will kick up a ton of

00:03:55.680dirt creating the effect you see in red

00:03:57.200dead redemption 1

00:03:58.480but red dead redemption 2 looks like a

00:04:00.480firecracker by comparison and doesn't

00:04:02.319feel nearly as powerful

00:04:03.920the smoke effects in red dead redemption

00:04:05.4392 are still very impressive

00:04:07.120with thicker clouds and longer draw

00:04:08.720distances for the effect

00:04:10.319this also plays in strongly to the

00:04:12.000game's dynamic lighting and god rays

00:04:14.080especially in the early morning with

00:04:15.439that thick layer of fog and mist

00:04:17.600due to the game's time frame and

00:04:18.880location the hot heat haze doesn't seem

00:04:21.040to be as prevalent as it was in the dry

00:04:22.880dusty deserts of the original game

00:04:24.960this effect could still very well be in

00:04:26.800red dead redemption 2

00:04:28.000but i was unable to find it in my time

00:04:29.680playing through the game so far

00:04:31.360red dead 2 despite featuring many

00:04:33.040familiar locations from the original

00:04:34.560game

00:04:35.120does seem to take place in a much more

00:04:37.040heavily forested area

00:04:38.560most of redemption 2's environment

00:04:40.080consists of thick trees green rolling

00:04:42.000hills and cliffsides

00:04:43.440whereas most of redemption 1 was dry

00:04:45.360desert there were portions of the 2010

00:04:47.520game that took place in densely forested

00:04:49.199areas

00:04:49.759but these haven't aged nearly as well

00:04:51.680and when compared to the frozen forest

00:04:53.199in redemption 2

00:04:54.320it's not even a contest snow effects in

00:04:56.800red dead redemption 2 look unbelievable

00:04:58.800with incredible tessellation

00:05:00.240particle effects and realistic

00:05:01.680animations to go along with it

00:05:03.600following footprints in the snow is not

00:05:05.120necessarily a new thing in gaming

00:05:06.720in fact games like assassin's creed 3

00:05:08.479back in 2012 managed to pull off

00:05:10.080something similar

00:05:11.199but red dead redemption 2's tessellation

00:05:13.120looks significantly better in just about

00:05:14.800every way

00:05:15.840making the thin dusting in the tall

00:05:17.759trees area of red dead redemption looks

00:05:19.520sad by comparison

00:05:21.039weather effects in general just look

00:05:22.720much better in the sequel

00:05:24.160storms seem to actually travel across

00:05:25.840the game world rather than just

00:05:27.199randomly triggering the entire skybox to

00:05:29.039morph into storm clouds

00:05:30.720this works hand-in-hand with the dynamic

00:05:32.479lighting to provide a beautifully

00:05:33.840realistic simulation of real world

00:05:35.680weather

00:05:36.400next up we have water effects water as

00:05:38.880many of you might remember was john

00:05:40.400marston's greatest enemy

00:05:41.840killing him instantly if he stepped in

00:05:43.440too deep thankfully red dead redemption

00:05:45.6002

00:05:45.919does allow the player to swim in bodies

00:05:47.440of water and along with it

00:05:49.039we get even nicer water effects the

00:05:51.280surface of the water looks pretty decent

00:05:52.720in both games but redemption 2 includes

00:05:54.800a nice water surface simulation effect

00:05:56.960when the player interacts with it and

00:05:58.720the character's clothes can now get

00:06:00.000completely soaked rather than just the

00:06:01.680lower half

00:06:02.560and finally let's listen to a few sound

00:06:04.479comparisons now bear in mind that these

00:06:06.560weapons aren't identical

00:06:07.759so take this with a grain of salt but

00:06:09.680the real idea here is to show how the

00:06:11.680sound design in general has been

00:06:13.120improved

00:06:13.840with variations to sound reverb ambient

00:06:16.080effects and the clarity of the gunshots

00:06:17.840themselves

00:06:18.880but you guys be the judge which game do

00:06:20.800you think sounds better overall

00:07:42.840um

00:07:56.319let's go

00:08:11.680and that just about wraps up this

00:08:13.199episode of direct comparison

00:08:14.879as expected rockstar managed to improve

00:08:16.960in just about every aspect visually with

00:08:18.879red dead redemption 2.

00:08:20.479it's incredible to see what can be

00:08:21.919accomplished within a single game

00:08:23.440franchise when the developers aren't

00:08:24.879pushed to release a sequel

00:08:26.000right away red dead redemption was a

00:08:28.160beloved masterpiece when released back

00:08:29.919in 2010 and

00:08:31.039is still a fan favorite to this day but

00:08:33.440rockstar managed to push the envelope

00:08:35.120even further with red dead redemption 2

00:08:37.360delivering not only a more cinematic

00:08:39.279wild west video game experience

00:08:41.039but also delivering state-of-the-art

00:08:42.640graphics that will make any rtx gpu

00:08:44.560owner jealous

00:08:45.839thank you all for watching i hope you

00:08:47.120guys enjoyed this episode of direct

00:08:48.480comparison

00:08:49.440if you want to learn more about red dead
