00:00:18.400prominent series of games in my life
00:00:20.240since the release of assassin's creed 2
00:00:21.840i was totally on board with the
00:00:23.119franchise and purchased every new
00:00:24.400release when it came out i love seeing
00:00:26.160ezio's journey come to a close in
00:00:27.680revelations i loved pillaging ships and
00:00:29.599discovering treasure in black flag i
00:00:31.359loved unity's improved stealth combat
00:00:33.200and parkour
00:00:34.000and the game was absolute eye candy i
00:00:35.840haven't enjoyed the complete shift to a
00:00:37.280more rpg heavy game that origins and
00:00:39.280odyssey took
00:00:39.920assassin's creed 2 however well
00:00:43.360i don't really like assassin's creed 2.
00:00:45.760of course a great deal can be said for
00:00:47.120the way assassin's creed 2 improved on
00:00:48.719the first game as it clearly refined the
00:00:50.399mechanics of assassin's creed 1 and by
00:00:52.079all means serves as a good sequel
00:00:53.760the graphics are great for the time and
00:00:55.280even to this day still look pretty good
00:00:56.960and the world and costume design are
00:00:58.320arguably top notch
00:00:59.520however the game definitely has its
00:01:01.440flaws which made an
00:01:02.559ultimately unenjoyable experience for me
00:01:04.640i found that assassin's creed 2's
00:01:06.000gameplay was quite dull and even lacking
00:01:07.840in some cases the south was borderline
00:01:09.600non-existent and whatever semblance of
00:01:11.040stealth there was isn't fleshed out or
00:01:12.640even given to the player all the time
00:01:14.320the combat felt repetitive and i got a
00:01:16.080sense i'd seen just about everything the
00:01:18.000combat had to offer by the end of the
00:01:19.600first few missions
00:01:20.720the parkour while ambitious is quite
00:01:22.560janky and jank is one of my biggest
00:01:24.320issues with the game
00:01:25.360having to restart missions and being
00:01:26.720detected by enemies across the map was
00:01:28.400ultimately the cherry on top for my
00:01:30.000mind-numbing replay of this game
00:01:31.680drawn out sequences bugs and a myriad of
00:01:33.759other things left me feeling like this
00:01:34.960game was a trip down memory lane that i
00:01:36.960would never go down again now before i
00:01:39.280get into my reasoning behind such
00:01:40.560controversial statements i need to
00:01:41.920clarify a few things and i implore you
00:01:43.600to not skip this part of the video as
00:01:45.280its vital context
00:01:46.799firstly i don't think assassin's creed 2
00:01:48.720is a bad game by any means in fact i'd
00:01:50.560say it's a good game but it's just not
00:01:52.399for me
00:01:53.040secondly just because i don't like this
00:01:54.960game does not mean that i think you're
00:01:56.320stupid if you do like it if you like
00:01:58.159this game that is totally fine and i
00:01:59.759don't think my taste is better than
00:02:01.040yours there's no sense of superiority
00:02:02.880here and i don't want this video to come
00:02:04.320across as antagonistic or an aggressive
00:02:06.240attack against those who like the game
00:02:07.680but rather defense of my own opinion
00:02:09.599third if i say that i'm not a fan of for
00:02:11.520example the story of this game that does
00:02:13.200not mean that i like the other game's
00:02:14.800stories
00:02:15.360some of you seem to think that because i
00:02:16.800enjoyed odyssey i only want spartan
00:02:18.640kicks and rpg elements in video games
00:02:20.560which just isn't true

00:02:36.959what an assassin's creed game is all
00:02:38.400about
00:02:39.280then i probably just won't read it
00:02:41.360finally i'll be looking at this game in
00:02:43.040a vacuum of sorts to prevent it from
00:02:44.480turning into a huge comparison to the
00:02:46.000other games and to keep this video from
00:02:47.680being way too long
00:02:48.800okay now with that out of the way we can
00:02:50.160move forward and hopefully have a
00:02:51.519respectful and civil discussion and of
00:02:53.360course this is all my opinion
00:02:54.959anything i criticize is not me saying
00:02:56.560that something is objectively bad
00:02:58.400finally i want to clarify that the
00:03:00.000opinion i am about to present and
00:03:01.440attempt to justify is coming from a
00:03:03.120self-proclaimed fan of the franchise
00:03:05.040i've played almost every mainline game
00:03:06.720in the franchise with the exception of
00:03:08.159origins and rogue i have at least
00:03:09.760purchased both of those games i'm about
00:03:11.280two hours into origins but i'm too busy
00:03:13.120to get to those yet but i plan to
00:03:14.959as far as the ezio games i have 100
00:03:16.879completed all of the seo games and on
00:03:18.720top of that i've also 100 completed
00:03:20.800unity and syndicate so i feel like i'm
00:03:22.720quite familiar with the series at this
00:03:24.159point and i've been playing the games
00:03:25.440for years now
00:03:26.560one of the first things i need to
00:03:27.680mention is that this game is definitely
00:03:29.280old by now
00:03:30.000coming out in late 2009 i of course
00:03:31.680won't criticize things like graphics as
00:03:33.360they are more than likely a product of
00:03:34.799the times and criticizing it now would
00:03:36.319be a little ridiculous
00:03:37.599the graphics in this game obviously are
00:03:39.280not top of the line for today's
00:03:40.480standards but surprisingly the overall
00:03:42.239presentation still holds up
00:03:43.680don't get me wrong there are still some
00:03:44.879character models that look a little
00:03:46.159funny to say the least
00:03:47.440but damn if this game isn't pretty the
00:03:49.440costume and world design in particular
00:03:51.040look spectacular and it's clear that a
00:03:52.480lot of time and effort went into
00:03:53.680designing the character models the
00:03:55.040buildings the weapons and it all comes
00:03:56.720together to form a product that on the
00:03:58.080surface is still kind to the eyes
00:03:59.760furthering this is the ui which has a
00:04:01.360slick modern design to it which reminds
00:04:03.120you that you are still within the animus
00:04:04.879cutscenes still look great and the lip
00:04:06.239syncing is overall pretty good voice
00:04:08.000acting itself is good too and i never
00:04:09.519heard any lines that stood out to me for
00:04:10.959being either poorly delivered or written
00:04:12.879animations for this game still look
00:04:14.319pretty good too with combat animations
00:04:15.840looking brutal and these combat
00:04:17.120animations have quite a bit of variety
00:04:18.560too
00:04:18.880ranging from the takedowns to your fists
00:04:20.400to the much faster dagger swipes the
00:04:22.079buildings have some unique designs
00:04:23.360however there are a few cases of
00:04:24.720building assets and even entire
00:04:26.240buildings being copy and pasted such as
00:04:28.160this building here in venice and this
00:04:29.840near identical building in florence
00:04:31.759fortunately you don't usually notice
00:04:33.199these things while playing the game as
00:04:34.320you're always running
00:04:35.199jumping and climbing your way to the
00:04:36.560next objective the parkour is another
00:04:38.720aspect of the game that still holds up
00:04:40.160pretty well
00:04:40.960of course when comparing it to games
00:04:42.240like unity the difference for me is
00:04:43.680night and day but it still functions
00:04:45.199most of the time
00:04:46.080my biggest issue with the parkour is its
00:04:48.000lack of flow
00:04:49.120there's often a lot of stop and go to
00:04:50.720the animations and climbing and it can
00:04:52.400feel pretty sluggish at times
00:04:54.080sometimes you just get into a flow of
00:04:55.440reaching and lifting yourself brick by
00:04:56.960brick but this doesn't happen too
00:04:58.479often and the animations for getting up
00:05:00.160here got quite old as it's the same
00:05:01.840reaching animation over and over
00:05:04.000when the different animations do play it
00:05:05.759unfortunately results in that stop and
00:05:07.360go that i mentioned earlier
00:05:08.800this game also followed the series trend
00:05:10.479of it being faster to get somewhere on
00:05:12.080the ground than it is to use your
00:05:13.360parkour abilities
00:05:14.560on top of that it's usually safer to
00:05:16.080stick to the ground too as when you're
00:05:17.360in the later stages such as venice the
00:05:19.120buildings are high enough that a fall
00:05:20.400could be fatal
00:05:21.360still i think the fact that you can
00:05:22.639climb basically every surface in the
00:05:24.160game is still incredible even if it is
00:05:25.840rough around the edges within the
00:05:27.280context of the time of this game's
00:05:28.720release
00:05:29.280i don't think any other game had a free
00:05:30.880running system with this much depth and
00:05:32.560even to this day
00:05:33.440few of them do i think for the time it
00:05:35.440was a little too ambitious but it's
00:05:37.039ultimately a thing i really enjoyed
00:05:38.479about the game
00:05:39.600i really enjoyed the renovations that
00:05:41.039could be made to the villa i know it
00:05:42.479seems a little dumb but i enjoyed having
00:05:44.080a constant source of income and actually
00:05:45.600seeing the individual changes made to
00:05:47.199the many shops
00:05:48.240i know it's totally a pointless aspect
00:05:49.919of the game but i thought it was just
00:05:51.039pretty enjoyable as it gave you
00:05:52.240something to put your money towards once
00:05:53.600you bought all the weapons and armor you
00:05:54.960needed
00:05:55.520so i guess i should stop beating around
00:05:57.360the bush and talk about the things i
00:05:59.039don't like
00:06:00.240let's start with the combat the combat
00:06:01.759while being reasonably fun for the first
00:06:03.280few hours gets quite old quite quickly
00:06:05.440you have a myriad of abilities to choose
00:06:07.199from ranging from a basic attack a
00:06:08.880counter and a grab
00:06:10.160when trying to execute a counter waiting
00:06:11.680for a guard to strike may take some time
00:06:13.520so instead of waiting you can taunt the
00:06:14.960enemy which will force an attack from
00:06:16.479them
00:06:16.960there are even different enemy types
00:06:18.319within the game being the basic soldier
00:06:20.080the more nibble and agile soldier the
00:06:21.919armored standard soldier
00:06:23.120and the beefy super armored soldier the
00:06:25.039nimble enemies attack faster than the
00:06:26.639normal enemies and are the only enemy
00:06:28.240type that can actually outrun ezio
00:06:30.080they can quickly dodge a lot of your
00:06:31.440attacks but they lack armor meaning that
00:06:33.039it won't take long to finish them off
00:06:34.639the typical enemy and the armored ones
00:06:36.240can be taken down in the same way
00:06:37.520however the armored ones have the
00:06:38.800ability to parry some of your attacks
00:06:40.639the beefier ones are slowest but do the
00:06:42.319most damage and take the most damage
00:06:44.080too while it may seem nice to have a
00:06:45.759variety of different enemy types they
00:06:47.280all unfortunately
00:06:48.080are taken down the same way be that
00:06:49.759through wailing on them with your sword
00:06:51.039by mashing axe or by counter-killing
00:06:52.960them
00:06:53.440i found at the beginning of the game
00:06:54.880most of the enemies can be killed with a
00:06:56.400single counter however this quickly
00:06:58.080turned the game into wait and press a
00:06:59.680single button
00:07:00.560sure you could attack the enemies but it
00:07:02.080never did as much damage as an instant
00:07:03.840kill counter did
00:07:04.800the later stages present beefier enemies
00:07:06.639that only take a square or two of damage
00:07:08.240when being countered and the bosses are
00:07:09.840a mash x marathon
00:07:11.039these beefier enemies can't be taken out
00:07:12.639by countering with your sword or dagger
00:07:14.240but instead
00:07:14.880switching to your fists where you can
00:07:16.080disarm an enemy upon countering them
00:07:18.000upon disarming and equipping their
00:07:19.360weapon you can immediately press x to
00:07:21.039instantly kill them with their own
00:07:22.240weapon
00:07:22.720you could also throw a smoke bomb or use
00:07:24.479poison but the disarm encounter method
00:07:26.080was my go-to
00:07:27.199the bosses in the game are the beefiest
00:07:28.720of health sponges and i found them to be
00:07:30.240quite boring for the most part the
00:07:31.599bosses function
00:07:32.400the exact same as a normal enemy with
00:07:34.160the only difference being their massive
00:07:35.599health bars
00:07:36.479this led to boss fights being
00:07:37.759uninteresting as they didn't change
00:07:39.199anything compared to the basic minute to
00:07:40.880minute gameplay
00:07:41.759they could have designed the bosses
00:07:42.960differently to make them more engaging
00:07:44.319for the player
00:07:45.039maybe they could program a boss that
00:07:46.319swings his sword multiple times and you
00:07:47.759would have to counter their attacks one
00:07:49.120after the other and if you don't counter
00:07:50.639or get the timing wrong you would take a
00:07:52.400hit
00:07:52.720rodrigo borgia specifically was a boss
00:07:54.720fight that felt not only underwhelming
00:07:56.240but
00:07:56.560far too easy the overall lack of
00:07:58.560difficulty with the combat is easily my
00:08:00.240biggest
00:08:00.639issue there are two particular abilities
00:08:02.479or methods of killing that i've left
00:08:04.160out those being the instant kill combo
00:08:06.160and the hidden blade counters
00:08:07.680firstly when attacking an enemy an enemy
00:08:09.599may parry your attack
00:08:11.120if this happens and you immediately tap
00:08:12.879the attack button upon seeing the parry
00:08:14.400animation then you will kill the enemy
00:08:16.240this method is never explained to you in
00:08:17.840game and if it is then miraculously both
00:08:19.759myself and nm1239 have missed it
00:08:22.720while it may seem like this adds quite a
00:08:24.240lot of depth to the game it
00:08:25.840unfortunately can be performed by just
00:08:27.360mashing square and hence it's not very
00:08:29.360difficult
00:08:30.400hidden blades on the other hand are
00:08:31.840absolutely broken in this game
00:08:33.519it can counter any enemy now the window
00:08:35.599that you have to counter an enemy is
00:08:37.039much shorter than that of a sword or a
00:08:38.479dagger but it's still so large that it
00:08:40.159ultimately makes the game way too easy
00:08:42.320i even went out of my way to play the
00:08:44.159game without using the hidden blades or
00:08:45.760any armor until i received the armor of
00:08:47.440altair
00:08:48.240even when taking the game's difficulty
00:08:49.760into my own hands i found the game was
00:08:51.360brutally easy
00:08:52.399and having abilities such as a hidden
00:08:54.000blade counter and instant kill combo on
00:08:55.680top of the armor of altair which grows
00:08:57.519your health bar to where it takes up
00:08:58.880half the screen
00:09:00.080doesn't really help with the difficulty
00:09:02.080what you see in the first hour of the
00:09:03.279game is essentially what you get when it
00:09:04.720comes to the combat
00:09:05.839while there are some different mechanics
00:09:07.279such as dodging strafing throwing dirt
00:09:09.040at the enemy grabbing and using
00:09:10.320projectiles all of them are introduced
00:09:12.160quite early and
00:09:13.200all are rarely effective i'm not gonna
00:09:15.360sit here and claim the game should have
00:09:16.880combat that changes or evolves as the
00:09:18.560game progresses
00:09:19.440as a difficult task for any game
00:09:20.880especially one that isn't necessarily
00:09:22.320combat centric however i feel it is
00:09:24.320unfair to criticize some of the more
00:09:25.680recent games in the franchise for having
00:09:27.360repetitive combat while ignoring that
00:09:29.040same issue which is present in this game
00:09:31.200i don't believe that the combat being
00:09:32.640shallow or repetitive is strictly a
00:09:34.240matter of technology
00:09:35.440other games that have come out at the
00:09:36.720time have had combat much more enjoyable
00:09:38.640and have had combat systems with many
00:09:40.399deeper layers to them the first to come
00:09:42.080to mind
00:09:42.640a game that was released a few months
00:09:44.240before assassin's creed 2 would be demon
00:09:46.320souls
00:09:46.880i could very easily go on about the
00:09:48.399combat and the depth of the combat but
00:09:50.080i'd rather not go on too much of a
00:09:51.360tangent
00:09:52.000devil may cry 4 also has quite a deep
00:09:53.920and complex combat system and that game
00:09:55.680came out in 2008
00:09:56.959a year before assassin's creed 2. the
00:09:58.880point of this comparison is not to say
00:10:00.399that these games are better than
00:10:01.519assassin's creed 2. but to say that the
00:10:03.360technology
00:10:04.000and the ability to create a combat
00:10:05.600system with depth was there for the time
00:10:07.440period and for me
00:10:08.640i'm not seeing it here i feel the need
00:10:10.560to make this point because a common
00:10:11.839rebuttal i've seen to pretty much any
00:10:13.360criticism of this game including the
00:10:15.120combat
00:10:15.680is well of course the combat isn't deep
00:10:17.519it's 11 years old
00:10:18.800now of course i don't expect the game to
00:10:20.640have devil may cry levels of depth
00:10:22.160within the combat and i think it would
00:10:23.519be ridiculous to expect such from a game
00:10:25.360however
00:10:26.000i think the combat we got here is
00:10:27.200severely lacking i understand that dmc's
00:10:29.279gameplay also steps outside of realism
00:10:31.279quite a lot and i'm not saying that i
00:10:32.800want assassin's creed 2 to be like that
00:10:34.480but the point i'm trying to make is that
00:10:35.839the ability to create a deep combat
00:10:37.440system was there
00:10:38.720now my own assumptions when playing the
00:10:40.160game as to why the combat felt so dull
00:10:42.000and overall boring was because you
00:10:43.519weren't really meant to use it i mean
00:10:45.200being an assassin
00:10:46.000is all about being a stealth badass who
00:10:47.760lurks in the shadows only to cut through
00:10:49.440enemies when they least expect it right
00:10:52.320right the south in this game really
00:10:56.399confuses me
00:10:57.360the game takes a different spin on the
00:10:58.800typical stealth you would see in
00:10:59.920something like metal gear solid
00:11:01.440instead of sticking to the shadows the
00:11:02.800game encourages you to hide in plain
00:11:04.399sight which is really awesome
00:11:06.000there are different groups that you can
00:11:07.120hire and you can order them to either
00:11:08.480follow you allowing you to blend in with
00:11:10.079the crowd
00:11:10.560or order them to distract guards you can
00:11:12.560sit on a bench to go invisible to guards
00:11:14.399or hide in the many haysacks littered
00:11:15.920throughout ancient italy one of my
00:11:17.360issues with this system however is that
00:11:18.959it's never expanded upon
00:11:20.560the game teaches you very early on how
00:11:22.240to order cortisones around and how to
00:11:23.839use them to distract guards or blend in
00:11:25.920and that's all it is there really isn't
00:11:28.160any depth past that
00:11:29.519it would have been cool if there were
00:11:30.480some guards that were giga chads and
00:11:32.000wouldn't be so easily distracted by
00:11:33.440those pesky knockers
00:11:34.880these special guards would have to be
00:11:36.160distracted in some other way through the
00:11:37.600use of thieves or mercenaries
00:11:39.279unfortunately the south segments of the
00:11:40.880game can be very quickly boiled down to
00:11:42.640just finding the nearest faction
00:11:44.160don't get me wrong the first few times
00:11:45.680it can instill a great sense of
00:11:46.880satisfaction
00:11:48.079but you quickly realize that that is
00:11:49.600always the easiest and in some cases the
00:11:51.600only option
00:11:52.720i don't necessarily have an issue with
00:11:54.240the system itself but more in the way
00:11:55.760that it's used
00:11:56.720or in this case the way it's not used it
00:11:59.040often felt like an easy win to any
00:12:00.880mission
00:12:01.360many of the tailing missions saw me
00:12:02.720exclusively sticking to the courtesans
00:12:04.240and when these tailing portions are
00:12:05.519upwards of six minutes
00:12:07.040it became pretty boring for me as far as
00:12:09.279systems like the benches and the
00:12:10.480haystacks littered around i don't
00:12:11.920believe that they should be expanded
00:12:13.120upon as they work perfectly fine the way
00:12:14.800they are and they work pretty well
00:12:16.000within the game's design
00:12:17.360since we're on the topic of design we
00:12:18.720should talk about the enemy detection
00:12:20.240because it's actually
00:12:21.760pretty decent sort of the enemies detect
00:12:23.920you at a reasonable rate and obviously
00:12:25.440once you get in their face they'll
00:12:26.639detect you
00:12:27.440however an issue with this is that when
00:12:29.519killing an enemy from above for example
00:12:31.600you'll kill him right on what feels like
00:12:33.360the exact frame in which he detects you
00:12:35.279when there is a mission that requires
00:12:36.560you to not be detected this single split
00:12:38.480second in which the enemy has detected
00:12:40.160you will cause you to fail
00:12:41.360the later levels in the game really
00:12:42.800exemplify how brutal the stealth can be
00:12:44.639as you're almost always just walking up
00:12:46.320to guards to stab them because running
00:12:47.839makes too much noise or using the
00:12:49.360throwing knives
00:12:50.399throwing knives however do little to no
00:12:52.320damage until you upgrade them through
00:12:53.760training at the villa
00:12:54.800unfortunately training at the villa
00:12:56.160isn't something you were encouraged to
00:12:57.440do so this led to a lot of players
00:12:59.040including myself feeling quite
00:13:00.320frustrated
00:13:01.120the knives much like any other resource
00:13:02.720like the smoke bombs are unfortunately
00:13:04.320finite however you can always buy more
00:13:06.000or loot some off of dead bodies this is
00:13:08.399eventually remedied through the purchase
00:13:09.920of upgrades to your knife belt allowing
00:13:11.519you to carry in excess of knives for
00:13:13.120whatever mission you're on
00:13:14.399unfortunately this leads to many
00:13:15.920missions in which taking out guards is
00:13:17.519unnecessarily difficult if you don't
00:13:19.200have the knife
00:13:19.839upgrades but if you do then it becomes a
00:13:21.680matter of tapping x when you see an
00:13:23.360enemy
00:13:24.000what confuses me the most about the
00:13:25.440stealth in this game is the way it
00:13:26.560completely ignores the basics of a
00:13:28.079stealth system while having levels that
00:13:29.600feel like they were made for a game that
00:13:31.200has the fundamentals of a stealth game
00:13:33.279i wonder why the game doesn't have a
00:13:34.800crouch button or at least a cover system
00:13:36.880i feel like it would help immensely with
00:13:38.320some of the south portions of this game
00:13:40.079the reason i say this is because there
00:13:41.440are some missions such as sequence 8
00:13:43.040memory 5 which see you storming the fort
00:13:45.040using leonardo da vinci's flying machine
00:13:47.199while the flying machine was a blast of
00:13:48.639a set piece to play through the end of
00:13:50.160the level stumbles quite hard
00:13:51.839you have to either spam knives or
00:13:53.360carefully walk around the guard's cones
00:13:54.959of vision in order to not be seen
00:13:56.639a typical strategy of paying the
00:13:57.920courtesans here won't work as they
00:13:59.760surprisingly enough don't operate well
00:14:01.839on high rises
00:14:03.040the issues with the enemies detecting
00:14:04.560you immediately if performing any
00:14:06.079assassination aside from the walking
00:14:07.680assassination is unfortunately present
00:14:09.519here
00:14:09.920i feel like this mission would be
00:14:11.040greatly improved upon if ezio could
00:14:12.480quickly snap to a wall or at least
00:14:14.079crouch making him harder to detect
00:14:16.000i know it sounds like such a simple
00:14:17.360change but it would help greatly for the
00:14:18.880many missions this game has to offer
00:14:20.800in the many tailing missions within the
00:14:22.399game there are multiple times where
00:14:23.519whoever you are tracking will turn
00:14:24.959around out of suspicion
00:14:26.399obviously quickly sitting on a bench or
00:14:28.000finding a crowd would be your first
00:14:29.279option if you weren't already there but
00:14:30.959would it not also make sense to quickly
00:14:32.720press circle for example to scurry
00:14:34.399behind a wall or some barrels
00:14:35.920there's only one real saving grace when

00:14:55.680this place is heavily guarded and just
00:14:57.440about every one of those guards is armed
00:14:59.199to the teeth

00:15:01.199supposed to do here maybe you are
00:15:02.720supposed to run up and take him out
00:15:04.079before he enters the captain's quarters
00:15:05.680but who knows because i just sniped his
00:15:07.120ass from a group of courtesans i assume
00:15:09.040you're supposed to stab him as a
00:15:10.399cutscene that plays upon assassinating
00:15:11.920him shows ezio close to him as if he was
00:15:14.160stabbed
00:15:14.880this and countless other missions were
00:15:16.240made to be a cakewalk by using the gun
00:15:18.160but damn if it wasn't a lot more fun
00:15:19.680than fiddling with the detection system
00:15:21.279until it worked in my favor
00:15:22.560i mean hell by the time i was in
00:15:23.839sequence 13 i had guards detecting me
00:15:25.680from across a map
00:15:26.880it was also certainly a lot more
00:15:28.320appealing than spamming smoke bombs
00:15:30.240speaking of sequence 13 in sequence 13
00:15:32.560memory 8 there's a templar in open field
00:15:34.720surrounded by guards and being detected
00:15:36.639causes you to instantly fail the mission
00:15:38.480i couldn't figure out a way to kill him
00:15:40.079without the gun and trying to take out
00:15:41.680any of the guards overseeing the field
00:15:43.360resulted in a quick desynchronization
00:15:46.000missions like this one and frankly a lot
00:15:47.600of the missions in sequence 13 felt
00:15:49.279brutally counter-intuitive
00:15:50.800such as sequence 13 memory 6 where there
00:15:53.279is a templar on a boat and he is sitting
00:15:55.279right at the door to the captain's
00:15:56.720quarters and of course getting caught
00:15:58.240will result in an instant failure
00:16:00.160you can't snipe him as he's covered by
00:16:01.680the sides of the entrance and the many
00:16:03.360guards
00:16:03.920you can't use courtesans as there are
00:16:05.360far too many guards around and they
00:16:06.959would quickly be depleted
00:16:08.320your best bet from what i've seen online
00:16:09.920is to try and spam smoke bombs while
00:16:11.600making your way to the templar or in my
00:16:13.440case get extremely lucky and that i was
00:16:15.120able to run up and stab him just as i

00:16:20.959stealth mechanics in the game

00:16:49.120designing a game around stealth however
00:16:51.120only a sound based detection system is
00:16:52.880present in assassin's creed 2 and it's
00:16:54.720nowhere near as deep as it is in
00:16:56.160splinter cell chaos theory
00:16:57.680so not only was the technology and the
00:16:59.360resources necessary available
00:17:01.199it was available within the company so i
00:17:03.279personally believe that saying the game
00:17:04.799is old and the technology wasn't there
00:17:07.439doesn't apply here as it's clear that
00:17:09.199the game is designed as if those
00:17:10.480mechanics were there
00:17:12.079so since we've now talked about both
00:17:13.520stealth and combat i feel like i can
00:17:15.199properly make the next statement about
00:17:16.799the different abilities and mechanics of
00:17:18.400the game
00:17:18.959i feel like assassin's creed ii has a
00:17:20.559lot of mechanics and abilities for you
00:17:22.240to use but there are a small selection
00:17:23.919of those mechanics and abilities that
00:17:25.439are exponentially more efficient and
00:17:27.039effective rendering all the other
00:17:28.400options near pointless
00:17:29.679when it comes to the combat what's the
00:17:31.280point in buying or even using the
00:17:32.799different weapons in the game if the
00:17:34.000hidden blade from the moment you get it
00:17:35.760will instantly counter kill any enemy
00:17:37.919what's the point of investing in the
00:17:39.280armor for the game if you don't really
00:17:40.880need it
00:17:41.440what's the point of learning the
00:17:42.559different combat moves and abilities
00:17:43.919from the villa if the hidden blades do
00:17:45.440the job perfectly well
00:17:46.720what's the point of using throwing
00:17:47.919knives if cortisones work better and by
00:17:49.760the time you get to a mission where you
00:17:50.880can't use headquarters ins you have the
00:17:52.559gun which serves as an
00:17:53.679instant win you have so many tools for
00:17:55.520the job but only a few of them are worth
00:17:57.120using while the others are
00:17:58.320for what people wanting an extra
00:18:00.080challenge that's what i'd initially
00:18:01.600thought
00:18:02.000i thought okay i won't use the hidden
00:18:04.000blades to instant kill in order to make
00:18:05.360the game more fun for myself
00:18:06.640that way i won't get bored during combat
00:18:08.559well using the sword is essentially the
00:18:10.320same thing but it's much slower
00:18:12.000i'm still countering enemies and waiting
00:18:13.679for them to attack except now i'm doing
00:18:15.520it more and with a larger counter window
00:18:17.679at least the different animations for
00:18:19.039the different styles of weapons made
00:18:20.480using a sword or a dagger somewhat
00:18:22.080interesting but that interest wore off
00:18:23.919after less than an hour
00:18:25.039it's like bringing an entire toolbox to
00:18:26.960screw in a nut you just need the wrench
00:18:29.360i mean sure you can try and do it with
00:18:30.799the screwdriver in hell maybe you could
00:18:32.640actually pull it off however the
00:18:34.160screwdriver wasn't designed for it
00:18:36.400social stealth wasn't designed for these
00:18:37.840levels where you have to sneak onto a
00:18:39.280boat or somehow get past a small army of
00:18:41.360guards protecting a templar in an open
00:18:43.039field and the basic stealth mechanics
00:18:44.720that are in the game just simply aren't
00:18:46.240refined enough
00:18:47.280so i think i've spoken enough about the
00:18:48.799mechanics of the game and i'd like to
00:18:50.480take some time to talk about the actual
00:18:51.840missions in the game and go over some of
00:18:53.679the sequences
00:18:54.640a common claim that i've heard
00:18:55.760throughout the community is that
00:18:56.720assassin's creed 2 is an awesome game
00:18:58.480because every mission was different and
00:19:00.080left an impression on the player
00:19:01.679i have to completely disagree with this
00:19:03.280as a majority of the game is what seems
00:19:04.799to be a rotation of three different
00:19:06.240objectives
00:19:06.880go here kill x go here protect x and go
00:19:09.600here grab x
00:19:10.640there are a few missions that break this
00:19:11.919mold such as the missions with the
00:19:13.120flying machine but all the missions
00:19:14.480blend together so much
00:19:15.840i actually didn't mind the basic mission
00:19:17.600structure but i did feel like the end of
00:19:19.280the game was drawn out to a crawl
00:19:21.200the biggest examples of padding are the
00:19:22.880codex pages and the entirety of sequence
00:19:25.28013.
00:19:26.080the codex pages are collectible that can
00:19:27.760be napped throughout your journey
00:19:28.720through ancient italy and they can be
00:19:30.080brought to leonardo da vinci to increase
00:19:31.840your maximum health
00:19:32.880the codex pages are also required to
00:19:34.640progress to sequence 14.
00:19:36.240now the game does tell you that the
00:19:37.520codex pages will be needed to access
00:19:39.200later memories but a majority of players
00:19:40.960including myself and a few friends
00:19:42.559found that they didn't have enough by
00:19:43.919the time that they were required and
00:19:45.520grabbing them was a huge pain
00:19:47.120the only redeeming quality is that they
00:19:48.720do mark them on your map once you
00:19:50.160synchronize a viewpoint and if for some
00:19:51.760reason
00:19:52.000you don't have all viewpoints
00:19:53.200synchronized then they will show up on
00:19:54.720your map
00:19:55.360but getting them felt a little
00:19:56.559unnecessary for me unfortunately they
00:19:58.640also don't mark these on your map until
00:20:00.799you get to the room
00:20:01.919where sequence 14 takes place this meant
00:20:04.320going to the mission and literally
00:20:05.760having a wall and a texas says
00:20:08.640not yet i can understand if this wasn't
00:20:10.799an issue for you guys but for me it
00:20:12.400really rubbed me the wrong way
00:20:14.000sequence 13 on the other hand is so
00:20:15.760blatantly filler nearly the entire
00:20:17.760sequence is filled with missions that
00:20:19.039are akin to that of many assassination
00:20:20.960side missions in the game and a large
00:20:22.559number of them will cause you to
00:20:23.600desynchronize upon being detected
00:20:25.600like some that i've mentioned earlier
00:20:27.120such as the templar on a boat or the one
00:20:29.039in a field a majority of these missions
00:20:30.799feel counter-intuitive and because of
00:20:32.320how easily they can be cheesed with the
00:20:33.679gun
00:20:34.320it felt like an hour and a half of busy
00:20:35.919work by the time you do get to this
00:20:37.520point of the game you've already
00:20:38.480performed multiple assassinations in a
00:20:40.320myriad of different ways and that's
00:20:41.840assuming you didn't bother with the
00:20:43.200bundles of assassination contracts which
00:20:45.120are available quite early on
00:20:46.880these missions don't offer anything new
00:20:48.559for you to do in the sense of getting to
00:20:50.240or taking down the enemy and the only
00:20:52.000thing the missions in the sequence do
00:20:53.440that the side quests don't is
00:20:54.960upping the enemy count to a limiting
00:20:56.559degree due to the amount of enemies
00:20:58.480present in such a condensed mission area
00:21:00.559there were few and sometimes only one
00:21:02.559place and route for you to take to your
00:21:04.320target
00:21:04.799because if you step outside those routes
00:21:06.320you were spotted and subsequently
00:21:07.679detected quite fast
00:21:09.120i wish they had left more gaps for the
00:21:10.720player to work with maybe during the
00:21:12.240mission where you have to assassinate
00:21:13.600the doctor they could leave a gap in the
00:21:15.120guards that are guarding the doctor
00:21:16.720making it easier to sneak between the
00:21:18.320guards and slip on the old sleeping
00:21:19.679medication
00:21:20.559i figure before we get into the story i
00:21:22.480should mention the bugs that showed up
00:21:24.000in my game
00:21:24.960i know that bugs are a tough thing to
00:21:26.320cover since each player will experience
00:21:27.919different bugs on each playthrough and
00:21:29.520some people might experience a ton of
00:21:31.120bugs and some might experience
00:21:32.640not at all i however found that i ran
00:21:34.720into quite a few
00:21:35.679some of which leaving me giggling like a
00:21:37.200little child and some that forced me to
00:21:38.880desynchronize
00:21:39.840there was a specific mission within
00:21:41.280sequence 5 memory 4 where preacher needs
00:21:43.280to be assassinated
00:21:44.240on top of a tower after getting up to
00:21:46.159the tower and taking out the guards i
00:21:47.840realized that my target was nowhere to
00:21:49.600be found
00:21:50.240i had to jump off and desynchronize
00:21:51.760myself as there isn't a reload to the
00:21:53.280last checkpoint feature in the main menu
00:21:55.440in other news there was quite a
00:21:56.720hilarious bug during sequence 10 memory
00:21:58.640one and i'll just let you watch this one
00:22:14.159so i actually don't want to criticize
00:22:15.600the game for bugs like this because it
00:22:17.039110 percent did not affect my experience
00:22:19.600though i thought i'd mention it because
00:22:20.799it was pretty funny
00:22:22.000another bug that was definitely swinging
00:22:23.600more towards frustration than humor was
00:22:25.679during
00:22:26.000sequence 13. i was being detected by
00:22:28.240groups from across a map
00:22:29.600through walls or even through entire
00:22:31.280city blocks unfortunately the most
00:22:33.120egregious and longest lasting bug was
00:22:34.799during sequence 13
00:22:36.080where i had two detection symbols on me
00:22:37.919at all times even through loading
00:22:39.760screens and desynchronizations the
00:22:41.360symbols were there and this lasted for
00:22:43.120upwards of half an hour
00:22:44.720i can at least admit that eventually i
00:22:46.400just stopped noticing it but geez man it
00:22:48.400certainly wasn't the high point of my
00:22:49.840experience
00:22:50.799now i could go on talking about bugs in
00:22:52.559this game but it just isn't worth it
00:22:54.080your experience may vary but in this
00:22:55.760case i saw more bugs in this game than
00:22:57.520unity on day one
00:22:59.200finally i want to talk about ezio and
00:23:00.960the story of this game
00:23:02.320i didn't enjoy ezio as a character very
00:23:04.000much and i didn't enjoy the story
00:23:05.360surrounding him
00:23:06.159now of course this portion of the video
00:23:07.919will be the most subjective however i
00:23:09.919still ask that you hear me out
00:23:12.000ezio is a mary sue in this case gary sue
00:23:15.280would be a more suitable term but by my
00:23:16.880own definition in the definitions of
00:23:18.480friends
00:23:18.880a mary sue gary stew is a fictional
00:23:21.280character who is so competent or perfect
00:23:23.280that it appears absurd
00:23:24.559even in the context of the fictional
00:23:26.240setting literally from the first moment
00:23:28.080that you see ezio as a little baby he is
00:23:30.080held in the air as if to say
00:23:31.919look at how special you'll be he's
00:23:34.320blatantly told on multiple occasions
00:23:36.159that there is a prophecy surrounding a
00:23:37.679prophet who will change the world and
00:23:39.280the creed
00:23:39.919literally tells him that he is the
00:23:41.440prophet and the chosen one
00:23:43.440a prophet's arrival was foretold
00:23:46.640and unbeknownst to us here you are
00:23:50.480perhaps all along you were the one we
00:23:52.720sought
00:23:54.320now don't get me wrong there are tons of
00:23:56.000protagonists that are special but ezio
00:23:58.000never makes a mistake
00:23:59.440if he does make a mistake he never
00:24:00.960suffers any consequences for them either
00:24:02.960every bad thing that happens to ezio is
00:24:04.799a product of his environment or someone
00:24:06.640around him
00:24:07.440his parents dying are a product of a
00:24:09.120templar conspiracy against his family
00:24:10.880and it was pure luck that he was able to
00:24:12.720evade the guards
00:24:13.760some have argued that ezio made the
00:24:15.360mistake of giving the letter to uberto
00:24:17.279but how was that his fault
00:24:18.960he didn't know hiberto was a templar
00:24:20.640neither did ezio's father
00:24:22.159the only time ezio genuinely gets bested
00:24:24.240is due to a brutal level of incompetence
00:24:26.720when chasing down a templar in sequence
00:24:28.40012 he completely lets his guard down and
00:24:30.320somehow when he is delivering the final
00:24:31.919blow to this templar he does not notice
00:24:34.159a knife
00:24:34.799piercing his body until the entire blade
00:24:37.440is inside of him
00:24:38.559this is the only time he suffers a
00:24:40.000consequence and it's less of a
00:24:41.279consequence to the character and more of
00:24:42.960a consequence to the player
00:24:44.400since this action is what ignites
00:24:46.000sequence 13 and sequence 13 is easily
00:24:48.640the worst sequence in the game
00:24:50.880it could be argued that ezio messes up
00:24:52.480when he kills vieira as he doesn't give
00:24:54.080him the proper respect but again there
00:24:55.679is no consequence to this
00:24:57.440sure he suffers a huge consequence at
00:24:59.279the beginning of brotherhood from not
00:25:00.799killing rodrigo
00:25:02.240but not only is that in a different game
00:25:04.159but it's a consequence to an action that
00:25:05.919is portrayed as morally correct in this
00:25:07.840game
00:25:08.400another sign of a gary stew is when a
00:25:10.080character is perfect at everything
00:25:11.919ezio's immediately irresistible to every
00:25:14.080woman he meets
00:25:15.120ranging from christina at the beginning
00:25:16.720of the game to katarina's forza much
00:25:18.960later on
00:25:19.840even the courtesans are practically
00:25:21.360falling over themselves to get some and
00:25:23.360it just feels like we're playing as the
00:25:24.720product of some fan fiction
00:25:26.320ezio's literally responsible for the
00:25:28.720latte
00:25:29.360he just casually says he likes to have
00:25:31.200milk with his coffee like
00:25:33.200what
00:25:38.400a little peter if you ask me just seems
00:25:40.880lacking somehow
00:25:42.720i don't know have you considered adding
00:25:44.240sugar maybe or latte
00:25:46.400i suppose it's something of an acquired
00:25:48.080taste where is ezio's ark
00:25:50.000it's clear that at the end of the game
00:25:51.440he is no longer trying to avenge his
00:25:53.200parents by killing templars but this is
00:25:55.200literally happening out of nowhere at
00:25:57.039the end of sequence 13 he gives a speech
00:25:59.039about how you need to find your own
00:26:00.320truth and how letting vengeance consume
00:26:02.000you won't bring your family back he then
00:26:03.840points to his friends as if to say they
00:26:05.440were responsible for guiding him to this
00:26:07.039realization
00:26:08.240from what i've seen mario not only
00:26:10.320prevented ezio from potentially fleeing
00:26:12.320the country but sent him out on his
00:26:14.240quest for revenge by telling him about
00:26:15.919the templars
00:26:16.799and about how they need to be stopped
00:26:18.799mario then proceeds to train him
00:26:20.480in the act of killing and even gives him
00:26:22.400further tools to kill people
00:26:24.080also he could further his quest for
00:26:25.679vengeance the templars seek dominion
00:26:28.559over man
00:26:29.760and we the assassins are sworn to stand
00:26:32.799against them
00:26:34.640was uberto one of them yes and the other
00:26:38.159names on my father's list
00:26:40.559templars as well paola teaches ezio how
00:26:43.120to blend in and even shows that she too
00:26:44.880has been betrayed like ezio however
00:26:46.720instead of passing on the knowledge of
00:26:48.320not to revel in vengeance she instead
00:26:50.159gives him the abilities and skills
00:26:51.520needed to not only steal from people but
00:26:53.360to further his quest
00:26:55.039lavolpe doesn't really teach ezio
00:26:56.799anything as he just ends up showing ezio
00:26:58.320where a templar meaning is and
00:26:59.760informs him of some templar plots
00:27:01.679machiavelli shows up right as you obtain
00:27:03.360the apple
00:27:03.919all he seems to do is tell you that
00:27:05.200you're the prophet so i'm not
00:27:06.960necessarily sure where ezio gets this
00:27:08.559revelation but regardless he throws it
00:27:10.240out the window when he tries to kill
00:27:11.600rodrigo twice
00:27:12.720he literally says i thought
00:27:16.720i thought i was beyond this but i'm not
00:27:22.240i've waited too long lost too much
00:27:27.360requies you bastard i don't think
00:27:31.279so and then upon failing to finish the
00:27:33.520job he then draws his sword and hopes to
00:27:35.679strike him down yet again
00:27:37.600only for him to be stabbed again at
00:27:39.360which point he finally decides that he
00:27:41.039won't kill rodrigo
00:27:42.399it made no sense for him to kill
00:27:43.919hundreds of soldiers and a large handful
00:27:45.679of templar conspirators and figures only
00:27:47.919to stop at the leader
00:27:49.360i'm gonna briefly mention another game
00:27:51.039because it baffled me that this game
00:27:52.399received criticism while
00:27:53.600assassin's creed 2 didn't if you don't
00:27:55.760want spoilers for the last of us part 2
00:27:58.320then please skip to this point in the

00:28:01.360at the end of the last of us 2 ellie
00:28:02.960after killing hundreds of people on her
00:28:04.640quest to avenge her pseudo family stops
00:28:06.640at abby because it won't change what

00:28:09.360people were livid about this as it made
00:28:11.200the entire journey leading up to this
00:28:12.720point feel pointless
00:28:14.000regardless of how i feel about it why is
00:28:16.720that criticism applied to the last of us

00:28:32.559things can be explained through the
00:28:33.840ultimate plot device the animus but it
00:28:35.679doesn't change the way these time jumps
00:28:37.279came across
00:28:38.480so with that being said those are my
00:28:41.279major reasons for not liking assassin's
00:28:43.120creed 2. i could bring up some smaller
00:28:45.039issues but i don't want to dip into
00:28:46.640nitpick territory
00:28:47.840i think assassin's creed 2 was an
00:28:49.279ambitious game and it was a huge
00:28:50.720improvement on the first game however
00:28:52.640just because a game is better than the
00:28:54.320previous entry does not make the game
00:28:56.240immune to criticism
00:28:57.440i mean isn't that the point of a sequel
00:28:59.200to improve and expand upon the world
00:29:00.720story and gameplay mechanics of the
