00:00:09.920spending a fair bit of time with back
00:00:11.519for blood's beta the upcoming co-op
00:00:13.599shooter created by left 4 dead devs
00:00:15.679turtle rock studios though i think that
00:00:17.359might be a bit misleading to say because
00:00:19.359i don't think any of that original dev
00:00:20.960team are even still involved by the way
00:00:23.199though this thing's being pushed out as
00:00:24.880a left for dead spiritual successor
00:00:26.880though in most ways it actually
00:00:28.320regresses more than it progresses and i
00:00:30.800think it's the video game equivalent of
00:00:32.480when you copy your mates homework
00:00:33.920because you didn't want to do it
00:00:34.800yourself and you just changed the
00:00:36.480handwriting it's a first person horde
00:00:38.800shooter only instead of it being a
00:00:40.559strain of a flu virus that's turned
00:00:42.320people into zombie-like creatures this
00:00:44.399time it's a mysterious parasite that's
00:00:46.399turned people into zombie-like creatures
00:00:48.879called the ridden but the general gist
00:00:51.039is still the same former humans chase
00:00:53.120after you at high speed snarling and
00:00:55.199flailing their arms around as they try
00:00:56.879to take you out with three other people
00:00:58.559you've got to do your best to survive
00:01:00.079and complete your objective you're
00:01:01.280getting a bit of a brief respite in safe
00:01:03.359rooms in between each level
00:01:08.080instead of playing as a ragtag group of
00:01:09.920civilians now you're playing as the
00:01:11.920cleaners i'm the cleaner
00:01:14.880people again immune to the virus and
00:01:16.560doing their best to reclaim what's left
00:01:18.400of civilization basically what's gonna
00:01:20.240happen in australia at the end of the
00:01:21.920year when we're all gonna be let out of
00:01:23.200stage four lockdown now i know that this
00:01:25.360is still a bait up so you can't expect
00:01:27.439it to be perfect when it comes to
00:01:28.960glitches and bugs and i'm not really
00:01:30.720gonna focus on that stuff i mean it's
00:01:32.320like going to the mechanic when he's
00:01:33.680servicing your car and asking him why
00:01:35.439the bonnet's up but more than that is
00:01:37.200that i didn't really see any major
00:01:39.040problems on that front to begin with the
00:01:41.119game ran pretty smoothly i didn't get
00:01:43.119disconnected from matches i could join
00:01:45.439my friends games easily and outside of
00:01:47.600some wonky ai and being launched up into
00:01:49.759the goddamn stratosphere at one point
00:01:51.680the game seemed to run fine so that's
00:01:53.920not what this video is about
00:01:56.880what it's really about and the biggest
00:01:58.560takeaway that i got from back for blood
00:02:00.399is that it is just so incredibly boring
00:02:03.280and i just don't think that's gonna
00:02:04.640change all that much between now and
00:02:06.240when this thing gets released in october
00:02:08.560that's if it doesn't get delayed for
00:02:10.080another couple of months though maybe a
00:02:12.000delay might give them a fair bit more
00:02:13.599time to sort out some of the other
00:02:15.040issues that people are having with this
00:02:17.120game yeah yikes playing through the
00:02:19.599single player content for the first time
00:02:21.360in the beta took me about 9 minutes but
00:02:23.520it may as well have been 90 hours
00:02:25.680because i lost all sense of time when i
00:02:27.520was playing this and just went into
00:02:29.200autopilot mode shooting the same enemies
00:02:31.680over and over with an assault rifle or
00:02:33.360an smg as i walk through these
00:02:35.200unremarkable looking environments to get
00:02:37.040to the next loading screen
00:02:39.840and i can't think of any other time i've
00:02:41.599played something that's clearly had so
00:02:43.760much money put into it but that's also
00:02:45.840just been so boring before i jump right
00:02:48.800into this thing i do want to take a

00:03:38.480that's perfectly justified in my opinion
00:03:40.799but that's also going to be to its
00:03:42.159detriment because there's just so many
00:03:44.239things this game does worse than it's
00:03:46.000almost 12 year old predecessor on a
00:03:48.159positive note back for blood is actually
00:03:50.080kind of good in the way that the
00:03:51.200characters you choose to play as have
00:03:53.120different passive buffs and you should
00:03:54.640really be playing to that character's
00:03:56.080strengths and trying to help out your
00:03:57.280team
00:03:58.159so it's more of a tactical and strategic
00:04:00.560choice than it is just a cosmetic one
00:04:02.400people aren't just going to be picking
00:04:03.760someone because they like the way their
00:04:05.680hat looks or the funny things they say
00:04:07.840the character named mum for instance
00:04:09.760gives everyone on the team an extra life
00:04:11.519so they can be down an extra time before
00:04:13.280being killed
00:04:14.400i mean we're not keeping score here
00:04:15.840right thank you sir thank you sir
00:04:18.799whereas the john goodman clone hoffman
00:04:21.120increased the amount of ammo that
00:04:22.320everyone can carry on that not too it
00:04:24.240seems that there's much more of a focus
00:04:26.000on ammo conservation here compared to
00:04:28.000left 4 dead where ammunition was a bit
00:04:29.680of a one-size-fits-all deal now it's
00:04:31.759broken down into different categories so
00:04:33.919it almost doesn't make sense for every
00:04:35.759single person on the team to be running
00:04:37.520around with shotguns considering that
00:04:39.360means you're all going to be fighting
00:04:40.639for the spare shotgun shells and that's
00:04:42.960a good thing because four people rocking
00:04:44.800out the aa-12s and this could probably
00:04:46.960single-handedly turn the tide of the
00:04:48.800entire infection i mean seriously that
00:04:50.880gun is so overpowered
00:04:54.560there's definitely a feeling of these
00:04:56.080characters being over designed though if
00:04:58.160that makes sense like carly for instance
00:05:00.320with the i get offended by everything
00:05:02.080haircut the tattoos the jewelry and your
00:05:04.400coordinated leather outfit it just feels
00:05:06.720so out of place to me in a world that's
00:05:08.479really gone down crapper and it's kind
00:05:10.240of unrealistic that someone would look
00:05:12.080so prim and presentable with an outfit
00:05:14.320that's clearly had way too much time put
00:05:16.320into it or look at holly for instance
00:05:18.320running around with a jumper tied around
00:05:20.160her waist which yeah okay that looks
00:05:21.919fashionable but it doesn't seem to be
00:05:23.520very practical plus it seems like the
00:05:25.520kind of thing that a grab happy zombie
00:05:27.520would be likely to latch onto characters
00:05:30.000like walker and hoffman seem more
00:05:31.680realistic but these others they just
00:05:33.919kinda look like fortnite characters and
00:05:35.919they've definitely been designed more
00:05:37.360for flair than functionality remember in
00:05:39.360left 4 dead for instance how louis was
00:05:41.039still in his office attire half of his
00:05:42.880shirt was untucked his pants were all
00:05:44.720messed up and his tie wasn't even on
00:05:46.320properly now i get that these guys are
00:05:48.320supposed to be special zombie hunters
00:05:50.400prepped for going out into the
00:05:51.759wilderness and carrying out these
00:05:53.440important assignments but there's
00:05:54.960definitely a sense of their designs
00:05:56.400feeling out of touch with the state of
00:05:57.840the world yeah let's pick it up but then
00:05:59.759i mean in the same game where these
00:06:00.960people are making cringeworthy
00:06:02.560wisecracks half the time well maybe such
00:06:05.039an impractical outfit makes more sense
00:06:06.800and i'm giving it credit for it
00:06:09.759i guess my point is that i'm more likely
00:06:11.680to relate to realistic characters as
00:06:13.919opposed to cartoon ones
00:06:17.120the most interesting new system that
00:06:18.880back for blood incorporates though are
00:06:20.400the cards and this is something that's
00:06:22.000going to become essential for beating
00:06:23.440this thing on the high difficulties
00:06:25.039right so the whole point of the game is
00:06:26.240to play through all of these main acts
00:06:28.000and each time you finish one of the
00:06:29.360levels of which there's upwards of half
00:06:31.039a dozen you earn supply points then you
00:06:33.600spend these supply points back at your
00:06:35.199camp on buying cards and unlocking new
00:06:37.360decks or as they say in new zealand
00:06:39.600unlocking new dicks
00:06:41.440cards do a whole heap of things from
00:06:43.120increasing your base health points
00:06:44.720making reloads faster to increasing the
00:06:46.800amount of ammo you can carry at the base
00:06:49.199you can create your own custom deck
00:06:50.800almost like the loadouts in call of duty
00:06:52.720or something then whatever the first
00:06:54.319card is in your deck it's automatically
00:06:56.319equipped at the start of a run and then
00:06:58.000each time you finish a level you pick a
00:07:00.000single other card from your deck to add
00:07:01.599to your build savvy then the game also
00:07:04.080kind of throws cards back at the player
00:07:05.919with the corruption cards randomly
00:07:07.759generated handicaps it puts on each run
00:07:10.080like fog to mass player visibility
00:07:11.919you're putting alarms behind every
00:07:13.599single door yeah that's fun so i guess
00:07:15.919the idea here is that the further you
00:07:17.280get into a run you pick these cards
00:07:19.120strategically becoming really powerful
00:07:21.120and creating a really strong build which
00:07:23.360is all just so you can earn more supply
00:07:25.440points and then buy more cards i mean
00:07:27.919outside of the grind of just customizing
00:07:29.759your own deck what's the end game here
00:07:32.080did you do that on purpose i'd be really
00:07:34.080surprised if they don't end up just
00:07:35.520monetizing this aspect entirely where
00:07:37.520they make it so you spend like 12 bucks
00:07:39.599and you get 500 supply points or
00:07:41.360something and honestly that really
00:07:43.039wouldn't surprise me after what they did
00:07:44.720with evolve which i think still has to
00:07:46.560have some kind of record for being the
00:07:48.479most monetized game ever
00:07:50.560hard mode is actually genuinely hardy
00:07:53.120the jump from normal to hard for
00:07:54.560instance feels more like the jump from
00:07:56.400normal to expert in left 4 dead to the
00:07:58.560point that the devs are actually working
00:08:00.240on balancing this out
00:08:03.840the brief time i attempted to play
00:08:05.599through this we could barely make it out
00:08:07.039of the first couple of rooms and i
00:08:08.639really think they need to add in a
00:08:09.919fourth difficulty mode so you've got
00:08:11.360like easy normal heart and expert as
00:08:13.680opposed to just rebalancing the hard
00:08:15.280mode
00:08:16.160trauma is a new mechanic they've added
00:08:17.840in here too which is the more damage you
00:08:19.759take the more it lowers your maximum
00:08:21.280health points and then the only way to
00:08:22.960get this back to full is by using med
00:08:24.879stations found in locked rooms and this
00:08:27.280is going to be a really spicy mechanic
00:08:29.039to deal with on that hard mode one real
00:08:31.120piece of genuine praise that i can give
00:08:32.959here though is to the movement and the
00:08:34.560shooting in the sense that it at least
00:08:36.240feels smooth to control for a game where
00:08:38.560aiming shooting and mobility is really
00:08:40.800key it's handy at least that this
00:08:42.640doesn't feel like cold [ __ ] you can
00:08:45.200vault up ledges if they're not too high
00:08:47.200and about the only thing that i wish it
00:08:48.640had was sliding and being able to vault
00:08:50.480through windows otherwise running
00:08:52.800sprinting and jumping feels responsive
00:08:54.959and aiming down sights and reload times
00:08:56.800can often be inhumanly fast
00:09:06.000though the inclusion of aiming down
00:09:07.440sights also kind of does make it feel
00:09:09.600like any run-of-the-mill first-person
00:09:11.200shooter it's also the most generic
00:09:13.440lineup of weapons too and playing this
00:09:15.360it just kind of reminds me a lot of
00:09:16.880playing call of duty war zone the way
00:09:18.640you'd find all these different weapons
00:09:20.080lying around in crates that all had
00:09:22.080different attachments on them like
00:09:23.760stocks acogs and sciences need this all
00:09:27.519of which make incremental upgrades to
00:09:29.360things like the damage or the accuracy
00:09:31.120of these guns during combat you've even
00:09:33.200got hit markers and the way a character
00:09:35.200holds up their fists when they're
00:09:36.399unarmed looks the same as it does in war
00:09:38.399zone 2. obviously two men like we can't
00:09:40.800be doing all that bad in the apocalypse
00:09:42.800if there's assault rifles automatic
00:09:44.640shotguns and silencers in near perfect
00:09:46.880condition around every corner either
00:09:48.959well what do you know
00:09:51.120instead of just finding guns lying
00:09:52.640around on the ground in left for dead
00:09:54.480now you find them lying around on the
00:09:56.240ground in crates along with that other
00:09:58.399roster of offensive and defensive items
00:10:00.560like med kits pain pills molotov
00:10:02.800cocktails and pipe bombs
00:10:06.480annoyingly too you can't remove the
00:10:08.160attachments you've got for your current
00:10:09.680weapon which is annoying because it's
00:10:11.600really the attachments that make or
00:10:13.279break how good a gun is
00:10:14.959i don't think these are weapons pulled
00:10:16.240from asset libraries but man they really
00:10:18.320do feel like it and it's just the same
00:10:20.560[ __ ] you've seen in every other first
00:10:22.079person shooter there's an mp5 there's a
00:10:24.640vector there's a scar there's a beretta
00:10:26.880you've used these guns a hundred times
00:10:29.120they've always looked the same and
00:10:30.560there's nothing to differentiate them oh
00:10:32.880sweet sanctuary in left 4 dead the
00:10:35.440different weapon types had specific uses
00:10:37.839the shotguns were great at clearing out
00:10:39.519the hordes the snipers were great for
00:10:41.600the special infected especially the
00:10:43.279smoker and the hunter and the assault
00:10:45.040rifles were just good middle ground this
00:10:47.279time though there just doesn't really
00:10:48.560seem to be any significant difference
00:10:50.399between these weapons i think that's
00:10:52.320also kind of the problem of making a
00:10:53.839game like this in 2021 where we're
00:10:56.079really getting to the point now where
00:10:57.600military and horde shooters have really
00:10:59.360been absolutely done to death
00:11:01.440you know what i don't understand though
00:11:02.959is how they can add all of this kind of
00:11:04.800stuff in but then remove the most basic
00:11:07.120quality of life features like the shove
00:11:09.120attack from left 4 dead one of the most
00:11:11.040useful moves you had and perfect at
00:11:12.959crowd controlling the zombies now
00:11:14.720instead of that you've just got a basic
00:11:16.640melee attack which can only hit a single
00:11:18.399enemy not today [ __ ] even
00:11:20.800something as basic as not being able to
00:11:22.560have manual control over your flashlight
00:11:24.720like when did the simple convenience of
00:11:26.480being able to turn your flashlight on
00:11:28.160and off become an oversight about the
00:11:30.160newest thing they've added in here is
00:11:31.680that if you scare a flock of birds it
00:11:33.680somehow attracts the attention of the
00:11:35.360horde which is kind of the same as the
00:11:37.040car alarms in left for dead and i don't
00:11:39.440understand how this is supposed to work
00:11:41.440unless they're supposed to be some kind
00:11:43.120of hive mind birds that all communicate
00:11:45.040to each other but who knows the sheer
00:11:46.880amount of times you scare these things
00:11:48.480without even trying is just countless
00:11:51.519give me a break really annoys me too how
00:11:54.000it doesn't even show you the full stats
00:11:55.680at the end of each level or even the
00:11:57.200entire run part of the fun of finishing
00:11:59.120a left 4 dead campaign was seeing who
00:12:01.040had the most kills or you know seeing
00:12:03.040who friendly fired the most which in my
00:12:05.040case was almost always me still though
00:12:07.279like i said the shooting does feel good
00:12:09.279if nothing else i really like shredding
00:12:11.279through enemies with the vector plus i
00:12:13.120appreciate how the revolver is so
00:12:14.800overpowered that it kills those standard
00:12:16.800ridden in a single hit unloading that
00:12:19.040aa-12 into a wall of approaching enemies
00:12:21.360is satisfying us all hell and you've got
00:12:23.200to watch out for friendly fire a bit too
00:12:25.040so it's not all completely mindless
00:12:27.600but i reckon if you remove the ui from
00:12:29.440this thing and told someone to try to
00:12:31.120guess what game it was well they'd have
00:12:33.040a hell of a time picking it throughout
00:12:34.639the game you're constantly on the
00:12:35.839lookout for copper why it's copper i'm
00:12:38.000not too sure but hey that's the game's
00:12:39.760version of currency then at each safe
00:12:41.839room you've got these cases where you
00:12:43.360can buy new weapons ammo and items from
00:12:45.600yes someone was nice enough to leave
00:12:47.120these small cases lying around that are
00:12:48.959just jam-packed with every single item
00:12:50.720you'd ever possibly need from weapons to
00:12:52.959weapon attachments through the toolkits
00:12:54.800that get you into locked rooms this is
00:12:57.200also a really good example i think of
00:12:58.800how over designed this game is this
00:13:01.040barrage of icons and items to sift
00:13:03.040through i mean it takes a good minute or
00:13:04.639so of staring at this thing to process
00:13:06.480all of this information for the first
00:13:07.839time all i can say is is that i really
00:13:10.000miss those days of a minimalistic heads
00:13:11.920up display
00:13:13.040seeing as this is a first person shooter
00:13:14.959coming out in 2021 it also had to make
00:13:17.040sure it filled the requirement of
00:13:18.399running on the unreal engine 4. and one
00:13:20.560of the biggest problems you're going to
00:13:21.600have when making something run on the
00:13:23.200unreal engine 4 is that it's going to
00:13:25.120look a lot like every other game running
00:13:27.120on the unreal engine 4. most notably
00:13:29.120during the bush and forest areas where
00:13:30.959it just looks like the same looking
00:13:32.560trees grass and sun flares you've seen a
00:13:35.040dozen times before
00:13:36.720this is another big part too where back
00:13:38.399for blood is lacking i mean there's just
00:13:40.240no flare to any of these environments
00:13:42.160it's just generic looking trees
00:13:44.079buildings cars and so forth you could be
00:13:46.240somewhere in the midwest of america or
00:13:48.399you could be somewhere in eastern europe
00:13:50.079for all i know there's just nothing
00:13:51.680striking or memorable about really any
00:13:53.760of the locations you visit in the beta a
00:13:56.160lot of the sequences also just kind of
00:13:58.000feel like they're copied across from
00:13:59.360left to dead i mean that opening level
00:14:01.360in the beta reminded me a lot of the
00:14:02.959first part of no mercy and then the
00:14:04.800ending sequence reminded me a lot of the
00:14:06.800end of blood harvest even down to an apc
00:14:09.120comet to pick you up there's a section
00:14:11.120holding out in a church which is kind of
00:14:12.959similar to death toll in left 4 dead 2
00:14:15.120then you're having to run across a
00:14:16.320demolished bridge again similar to the
00:14:18.240final level in the parish
00:14:20.160despite the ridden being host for an
00:14:22.079alien parasite as opposed to a virus
00:14:24.320they're really still just your basic
00:14:26.320standard cookie cutter zombies and i
00:14:28.399know you can't really expect much from
00:14:29.839zombies they're just supposed to be
00:14:31.279fodder and little more than a
00:14:32.800distraction for whenever these special
00:14:34.720riddens show up only the special ones
00:14:36.560aren't really all that great either not
00:14:38.399to mention they lack a lot of the subtle
00:14:40.079design touches from left 4 dead that
00:14:42.000made those infected so memorable
00:14:44.240remembering left for dead how when one
00:14:45.519of those special infected was around
00:14:47.199you'd hear these very unique sound cues
00:14:49.120which gave them away before you even saw
00:14:50.880them
00:14:59.920you'd hear the wheezing of the smoker
00:15:01.680the growling of the hunter or that
00:15:03.440mountains you burp at the boomer and get
00:15:05.120yourself prepared the witch was also
00:15:07.360another classic example here in her
00:15:09.199sobbin off in the distance and that
00:15:10.720music slowly built into a crescendo the
00:15:12.959closer you got i mean it was terrifying
00:15:14.480at the time
00:15:18.240which
00:15:20.160well back for blood has none of that you
00:15:22.480just find yourself suddenly under attack
00:15:24.240by this special ridden without even
00:15:25.920knowing they were around
00:15:27.680[ __ ]
00:15:30.320those short quiet tense moments in
00:15:32.560between fighting the next horde are just
00:15:34.320completely gone here too and now it's
00:15:36.399just this constant steady stream of
00:15:38.480enemies removing any tension or
00:15:40.399atmosphere the game could have possibly
00:15:42.079had you just go from one room to the
00:15:44.000next shooting enemies the entire time
00:15:45.839with no real sense of pacing in between
00:15:48.399the music in general is also just
00:15:50.079completely lacking i mean i've still got
00:15:51.680that victory song from the end of left 4
00:15:53.360dead 2 stuck in my head to this day but
00:15:55.440the ending music for back for blood even
00:15:57.600after finishing it like 4 or 5 times now
00:15:59.920i couldn't sing it back to you if you
00:16:01.360had a gun to my head even the animations
00:16:03.680for some of these special written
00:16:05.120attacks is just kind of lazy like when
00:16:07.040your character gets constricted by one
00:16:08.880of the hawkers they're just locked in
00:16:10.320place in the standing position almost
00:16:12.160like they're t posing without the t and
00:16:14.480look again i hate to bring it back to
00:16:16.160left for dead but i will compare it to
00:16:17.839when you grabbed by the smoker for
00:16:19.440instance or the way the hunter would pin
00:16:21.279you down and start ripping you to pieces
00:16:22.959like it's the small things like that the
00:16:25.199rika is back for blood's version of the
00:16:27.120boomer he's a giant fat [ __ ] that
00:16:28.959vomits up bile and explodes when he's
00:16:31.040killed
00:16:35.759the tall boy looks like something out of
00:16:37.600resident evil lumbering around with a
00:16:39.199giant arm that makes me think that guy
00:16:40.959spends a lot of time home alone on his
00:16:42.639computer masturbation jokes i love him
00:16:45.440and this is about the most effort it
00:16:46.880seems they put into the animations
00:16:48.480because this guy can outright pick
00:16:50.160players up and then jack them off to
00:16:52.160death and then back for blood's version
00:16:54.240of the tank is the ogre a giant mini
00:16:56.320boss that stomps around and i think this
00:16:58.320thing kind of looks like what would
00:16:59.519happen if the stay puft marshmallow man
00:17:01.680was made out of someone's butthole but
00:17:03.440again very minimal animation work
00:17:05.280outside of it just lumbering around and
00:17:06.959having a couple of different attacks
00:17:10.240so overall i feel like these enemies are
00:17:12.160kind of boring and just not very
00:17:13.679memorable i know they're supposed to be
00:17:15.199adding in more for the final build and
00:17:16.799i'm just hoping these things are going
00:17:18.160to be more creative than the current
00:17:19.760lineup because right now these guys are
00:17:21.760underwhelming and just disappointing
00:17:27.199probably the most disappointing aspect
00:17:29.360in back for blood though is the gore or
00:17:31.280the lack thereof and i still don't
00:17:33.039understand man how a 12 year old game
00:17:35.039like left 4 dead 2 running on an
00:17:36.880inferior engine can still somehow look
00:17:39.360better here when it comes to the
00:17:40.480violence than a game made in 2021 does
00:17:43.440that's not to say there's not going to
00:17:44.880be a high body count in back for blood
00:17:46.640though you're gonna be killing upwards
00:17:48.000of a thousand ridden per run here but

00:19:48.160three rounds to decide who's the winner

00:19:57.600other team around during the campaign

00:20:26.799just hang back on a roof somewhere and

00:21:50.880thing that came out of back for blood's
00:21:52.559beta is that it made me want to go back
00:21:54.240and replay left 4 dead 2 with the boys
00:21:56.320and if it does nothing else but
00:21:57.760introduce a few new fans to that old
00:21:59.600series well then i guess the whole thing
